Authorities in South Korea are investigating a 56-year-old man suspected of unintentionally igniting a deadly wildfire that resulted in the tragic deaths of 30 individuals. The suspect was reportedly performing an ancestral rite when the blaze erupted in Uiseong county.
Suspect in Custody, Investigation Ongoing
The unnamed man was conducting an ancestral rite near a family grave on a hillside in Uiseong county, North Gyeongsang province, when the incident occurred. He has been formally booked but not taken into custody. Law enforcement officials will summon him for questioning after the on-site investigation concludes. The suspect refutes the accusations against him.
After ten days of intense firefighting efforts, officials announced on Sunday that the primary fires were entirely contained. The blazes caused considerable damage to numerous structures, notably including historic temples and cultural landmarks.
Eyewitness Account and Fire Progression
According to reports, investigators interviewed the suspect’s daughter, who allegedly stated that the fire initiated when her father attempted to use a cigarette lighter to burn tree branches that were overhanging the gravesite.
The Korea Forest Service reported that the conflagrations consumed over 48,000 hectares, an area approximately equivalent to 80% of the size of Seoul. It is estimated that roughly 4,000 buildings were decimated by the flames, encompassing residences, industrial buildings, and cherished national treasures.
Cultural Heritage Sites Impacted
Among the cultural landmarks impacted was Goun Temple, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This ancient temple, dating back to 618 AD, was one of the largest and most historically significant temples in the province. The majority of the fatalities were individuals in their 60s and 70s.

Despite the main fire being brought under control, authorities have cautioned that smaller fires continue to reignite, necessitating ongoing vigilance and suppression efforts.
