Son Confirms Death

Crispin Hellion Glover, the son of the esteemed performer and known for his role as George McFly in the “Back to the Future” film series, publicly confirmed his father’s passing on Saturday via his Instagram account. Details surrounding the circumstances of his death were not disclosed.

In a series of Instagram posts, Crispin Glover paid tribute to his father, captioning images with “Bruce Herbert Glover May 2, 1932 – March 12, 2025”. The posts also included photos commemorating Bruce Glover’s appearances in a 1965 episode of “Perry Mason” and in Roman Polanski’s acclaimed 1974 mystery thriller “Chinatown.”

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Born on May 2, 1932, in Chicago, Illinois, amidst the economic hardships of the Great Depression, Bruce Glover entered the workforce at a young age. At just six years old, he secured a job delivering groceries for a local store, earning 60 cents per week.

In a 2019 interview with The Original Van Gogh’s Ear Anthology website, Glover recounted, “I guess this woman had a store. She thought it was cute and decided to offer me a job.” He elaborated on his early work experience: “Ten cents a day delivering groceries after school and Saturday mornings so I made sixty cents a week. Sometimes I’d get a tip from whoever I was delivering to, but that was the beginning of the seeking of work.”

From Football to Acting

Following his high school years, Glover pursued football, playing for Wright Junior College and later joining a semi-professional team. His athletic pursuits were interrupted when he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1953 during the Korean War.

Upon his return from military service, a bout with malaria sidelined his football aspirations. This turning point led him to audition for a play in 1955, marking the commencement of his extensive career in show business. “When I came back with Malaria I couldn’t pick up that football scholarship so I had to go back to that junior college where I’d played football and pick up some more college credits,” he explained. “I saw a play being advertised that I went and tried out for.”

Stage and Screen Roles

Glover established himself as a versatile performer on both stage and screen. He was a part of the original Broadway casts of notable productions such as “The Lion In Winter,” “Mother Courage and Her Children,” and “The Night of the Iguana.”

In his mid-30s, he relocated to Hollywood, where he garnered guest-starring roles in television series including “Battlestar Galactica” and “Gunsmoke.”

Maintaining a prolific acting schedule, Bruce Glover consistently appeared in numerous projects each year. His most prominent roles included parts in “Walking Tall” and, most notably, in the Oscar-nominated James Bond installment “Diamonds Are Forever,” released in 1971.

Memorable Role as Mr. Wint

His portrayal of Mr. Wint in “Diamonds Are Forever” remains iconic, featuring memorable exchanges such as: Mr. Wint’s line, “If at first, you don’t succeed, Mr. Kidd?” followed by his partner Mr. Kidd’s reply, “Try, try again.”

The character met a memorable and somewhat gruesome end in the film, dispatched by James Bond, played by Sean Connery, who ingeniously used a bomb to eliminate the assassin. Glover recounted receiving praise from legendary Bond actor Sir Roger Moore for his performance in the film.

“The final moment in the film where Sean Connery does that rude thing pushing the hooha up my yaha and giving that character his final great sexual moment is the biggest laugh in the movie,” he stated in an interview.

Later Career and Legacy

Bruce Glover continued his acting career well into his early 80s. His final acting credit was in the 2015 film “Influence,” which also featured his son Crispin Glover.

He leaves behind his sons, Crispin Glover and Michael Leigh Glover.
