Billie Lourd Reflects on Family Legacy and Balancing Career with Motherhood

Actress Billie Lourd, daughter of the late Carrie Fisher and granddaughter of Debbie Reynolds, acknowledges inheriting comedic talent from her iconic family, but emphasizes her distinct individuality and approach to work-life balance. The star opens up about her family, her children and maintaining a thriving marriage with husband Austin Rydell while navigating the entertainment industry.

Comedy and Lineage

Lourd, 32, in a recent interview with People, humorously noted the genetic predisposition for comedy in her family. “I’d say definitely the comedy is in the genetics. They were better at it than me,” she remarked. Reflecting on her grandmother’s talents, she added, “I can do a fair bit of tap dancing, not as good as … young Debbie Reynolds, but that’s also in the genes, although my mom kind of sucked at tap dancing.” Despite these shared artistic inclinations, Lourd asserts her unique identity.

Distinct Individuality and Life Balance

“I’m a very distinct personality, definitely different from both of them,” Lourd stated. She highlighted a generational shift in priorities, explaining, “Well, it’s something you learn through generations. I think I’ve learned to balance my life and my work in a different way than they were able to do, and that was also a product of the times.” This perspective underscores her commitment to harmonizing her professional life with her personal life.

Parenting and Future Aspirations for Children

As a mother to Kingston, 4, and Jackson, 2, Lourd expresses a hands-off approach to their career paths. “But I don’t want to put pressure on them to do anything [in show business],” she clarified. While acknowledging her children’s charm and talent, she humorously shared, “But yeah, my kids are hysterical and cool and really good dancers and just awesome. We’ve all wanted someone to be a doctor in this family. Let’s hope we get a doctor out of them. Whatever they want to do, I’ll support.”

Navigating Parenthood with Husband Austin Rydell

In an exclusive interview with Us Weekly on Wednesday, March 26, Lourd shared insights into her relationship with husband Austin Rydell, emphasizing their teamwork in raising their young children. She revealed they are “in the trenches together with our kids” and underscored the importance of their bond, adding, “We always just make sure to remember that we’re each other’s best friend.” The couple, who have been in a relationship since 2016 and married in March 2022, welcomed Kingston and Jackson in 2021 and 2022 respectively.

Embracing Motherhood

Lourd openly expressed her deep affection for motherhood, telling Us, “I’m obsessed with my kids. It’s such a gift. I’ve wanted to be a mom my whole life and getting to do it is dreamier than any dream I could have ever dreamed. Absolutely beautiful. It’s awesome.” Her words convey the immense joy and fulfillment she finds in her role as a mother.

Partnership and Mutual Support

Discussing the dynamics of their relationship and careers, Lourd described their supportive partnership. “[Austen is] here with me right now, and he usually will take a photo with me,” Lourd mentioned. Detailing their professional arrangement, she explained, “He’s a producer [and] when he’s working, we bring our kids everywhere we go. I’ll go on set with him and then I’ll be, like, mom [and] wife at home. And then, when I’m working, he’s dad, husband at home.”

She concluded with an affectionate tribute to her husband, “He’s the greatest human in the world and supports me in everything I do — and I support him in everything he does. We are each other’s cheerleaders. I’m kind of obsessed with him.” This highlights the strong foundation of mutual respect and admiration in their marriage.
