Amber Ruffin Out as 2025 White House Correspondentsā Dinner Host; Comedy Performance Canceled
In a shift from previous years, the White House Correspondentsā Association Dinner (WHCD) will proceed without a celebrity host in 2025. Amber Ruffin, who was initially slated to emcee the annual event, will no longer fulfill that role, as the WHCA has opted to eliminate the comedic performance element from this year’s program. The decision, announced by WHCA president Eugene Daniels, aims to refocus the dinner on honoring journalistic achievements and supporting future journalists.
WHCA Prioritizes Journalism Awards Over Comedy
Daniels explained the rationale behind the change in a memo, as reported by CNN’s Brian Stelter. “The WHCA board has unanimously decided we are no longer featuring a comedic performance this year,” Daniels stated. He emphasized that this decision comes “at this consequential moment for journalism,” and is intended to ensure that “the focus is not on the politics of division but entirely on awarding our colleagues for their outstanding work and providing scholarship and mentorship to the next generation of journalists.” The WHCD is scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 26.
Ruffin Initially Announced as Host Last Month
Just last month, the association had announced Amber Ruffin as the emcee for the 2025 White House Correspondentsā Dinner. Daniels had expressed enthusiasm at the time, highlighting Ruffin’s suitability for the event. “When I began to think about what entertainer would be a perfect fit for the dinner this year, Amber was immediately at the top of my list,” Daniels remarked in a February statement. He lauded her “ability to walk the line between blistering commentary and humor all while provoking her audience to think about the important issues of the day,” and conveyed his excitement that she accepted the invitation.
Praise for Ruffin’s “Unique Talents”
Daniels further elaborated on why Ruffin was deemed an ideal choice for the prestigious event. He noted, “Amberās unique talents are the ideal fit for this current political and cultural climate.” According to Daniels, her “perspective will fit right in with the dinnerās tradition of honoring the freedom of the press while roasting the most powerful people on all sides of the aisle and the journalists who cover them.”
Ruffin’s Previous Comments on Hosting Gig
Amber Ruffin, known for her work as a co-host on Have I Got News For You, has not yet publicly commented on the WHCAās recent decision to remove the host position. However, prior to this programming alteration, Ruffin had mentioned her anticipation and slight nervousness about the role during a March 27 appearance on “The Daily Beast” podcast.
Acknowledging the Challenges of Political Humor
Speaking with podcast hosts Samantha Bee and Joanna Coles, Ruffin shared her approach to preparing for the White House Correspondentsā Association Dinner. “I have my Google Docs open at all times for throwing jokes in there and little thoughts Iām having, but ā¦ weāre a little ways out,” Ruffin said. She also alluded to the fast-paced news cycle, questioning, “News is happening at such a freaking clip that how are we supposed to hit that moving target? Also, how could you forget any of this stuff happened, you know what I mean?”
Ruffin’s Prediction on Trump’s Attendance
When asked about the potential attendance of former President Donald Trump, Ruffin offered a concise prediction: “No, I donāt.”
Limited Information on Dinner Attendees
“I honestly donāt think itās an important thing to him in any way,” Ruffin commented regarding Trumpās potential interest in the dinner. She also indicated her limited knowledge about the guest list at that time, stating, “Iām sure I will [get a rundown] at some point. I know the news organizations that will be attending. I donāt think the people confirm until quite a bit later.”
Expectation of Balanced Humor
According to Amber Ruffin, she had received instructions to ensure her jokes were “fair and balanced,” suggesting a commitment to neutrality in the comedic performance, a direction that is now moot with the cancellation of the host segment at the White House Correspondentsā Association Dinner.
