Nottingham Forest Through to FA Cup Semi-Finals After Penalty Shootout Victory

Nottingham Forest are celebrating their first FA Cup semi-final appearance in over three decades, thanks to a dramatic penalty shootout triumph against Brighton. Goalkeeper Matz Sels emerged as the hero, earning praise from manager Nuno Espírito Santo for his crucial saves.

Sels the Shootout Star

Sels, who had previously helped Forest overcome Exeter and Ipswich, consulted notes on his water bottle before heroically denying Jack Hinshelwood and Diego Gómez from the penalty spot. This followed a tense match where both sides remained deadlocked after regular and extra time. Captain Ryan Yates then stepped up to convert the decisive penalty, securing Forest’s place in the coveted semi-finals. However, Yates will unfortunately be suspended for the semi-final due to a booking received during extra time.

Manager’s Delight at Wembley Berth

“This victory is hugely significant, especially for Ryan, who has been with the club since his youth,” expressed a delighted Espírito Santo. He also referenced an earlier penalty decision that was initially awarded to his team but subsequently overturned by VAR.

“Reaching Wembley in such a prestigious competition is a momentous occasion in our journey together. We are absolutely thrilled,” the manager added.

Secret to Penalty Success

When questioned about the team’s proficiency in penalty shootouts, Nuno revealed, “It comes down to dedicated practice and the players maintaining their composure. From the moment I arrived at the club, I observed a strong camaraderie amongst the squad, and that forms the bedrock for everything.”

He further elaborated, “It’s a combination of excellent goalkeeping and accurate penalty taking. This marks only the first penalty we’ve missed across all shootouts, which is a testament to the players. And, of course, outstanding goalkeeping from Matz.”

Brighton Manager Acknowledges Setback

Fabian Hürzeler, Brighton’s manager, conceded his disappointment at not securing a win during extra time. He stressed the importance of a swift recovery, particularly after a heavy 7-0 defeat to Forest earlier in the season.

Focus on Rebound

“The immediate priority is to demonstrate resilience,” Hürzeler stated. “While today’s result is disheartening, we must refocus promptly on the challenges ahead. We have proven our ability to unite as a team, and we must replicate that strength now.”
