Gators Secure Final Four Berth with Stunning Comeback Victory Over Red Raiders

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – The top-seeded Florida Gators booked their ticket to the Final Four in dramatic fashion Saturday, overcoming a double-digit deficit to defeat the No. 3 Texas Tech Red Raiders 84-79 in the West Regional Final at Chase Center. This victory propels the Gators to college basketball’s biggest stage.

The high-stakes matchup in San Francisco determined the West Region champion. Later in the evening, the East Region final was set to unfold between No. 1 Duke and No. 2 Alabama, vying for the remaining Final Four position.

Dramatic Turnaround Seals Florida’s Fate

Facing a significant 71-61 disadvantage with just over six minutes remaining in the second half, and enduring a near four-minute scoring drought, the Gators appeared on the brink of upset. However, demonstrating resilience, Florida unleashed a decisive 23-8 surge to seize the lead and punch their ticket to San Antonio for the Final Four.

Clayton Jr. and Haugh Lead Offensive Charge

Senior guard Walter Clayton Jr. spearheaded the Gators’ offense, delivering a tournament-high 30 points. Sophomore forward Thomas Haugh provided crucial support, contributing 20 points to the winning effort.

Dynamic Duo Sparks Game-Changing Run

With their team trailing by ten, Haugh and Clayton ignited a scoring spree, amassing their team’s subsequent 17 points and propelling Florida to a 78-77 advantage. The effective pair connected on 7 of 14 three-point attempts, including five critical shots in the final five minutes and 24 seconds of the contest.

Williams Shines for Texas Tech in Defeat

Junior forward Darrion Williams led the Red Raiders with 23 points in a valiant, but ultimately unsuccessful, effort. Williams proved a dominant force throughout much of the game, consistently exploiting one-on-one matchups in the post.

Inside Presence Not Enough for Red Raiders

While Williams and sophomore forward J.T. Toppin, who also tallied 20 points, found success in the paint, Florida’s late surge from beyond the arc proved decisive. After a slow start shooting 4-for-16 from three-point range, Florida connected on five of their final eight attempts. Furthermore, the Gators capitalized at the free-throw line, converting 25 of 27 attempts.

Three-Point Shooting Overcomes Sloppy Play

Florida’s hot hand from three-point land compensated for an otherwise uncharacteristic performance marked by 12 turnovers, which Texas Tech converted into 22 points. Despite the Red Raiders’ effectiveness in forcing turnovers and attacking the interior, they could not overcome Florida’s dominance from three-point range and the free-throw line.

As West Region champions, Florida advances to the Final Four for the first time since 2014, marking a significant milestone for the program.
