Grizzlies Dismiss Head Coach Taylor Jenkins Ahead of NBA Playoffs
Memphis Grizzlies have surprisingly announced the dismissal of head coach Taylor Jenkins as the NBA playoffs approach. With only nine regular season games remaining, this coaching change comes as the team sits fifth in the Western Conference and prepares for postseason competition. Despite being playoff-bound, the Grizzlies are still actively contending, making this decision particularly noteworthy. Details regarding Jenkins’ tenure, reasons for his departure, and potential replacements are explored below.
Taylor Jenkins’ Tenure with Memphis
Taylor Jenkins has been at the helm as head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies since the 2019-2020 season. During his time, he achieved a record of 250 wins and 214 losses (.539 winning percentage). Notably, Jenkins is recognized as the franchise’s most victorious coach, having guided Memphis to the playoffs on three occasions. Among current NBA head coaches, Jenkins held the longest tenure with his team without an NBA championship, with only seasoned coaches like Gregg Popovich, Steve Kerr, Erik Spoelstra, and Michael Malone exceeding his time with their respective franchises.
Prior to his head coaching role with the Grizzlies, Jenkins gained experience as an assistant coach with both the Milwaukee Bucks and the Atlanta Hawks, both times under the leadership of Coach Mike Budenholzer.
Reasons for Jenkins’ Termination
The Memphis Grizzlies have not publicly disclosed a specific rationale for their decision to part ways with Taylor Jenkins at this time.
In an official statement, Zach Kleiman, Grizzlies’ President and General Manager of Basketball Operations, acknowledged Jenkins’ contributions: “I want to express my sincere gratitude for Taylor’s dedication to this team and the Memphis community over the past six seasons. This was a complex decision, especially considering the consistent progress of our players and the team’s overall success achieved under Taylor’s direction.”
Kleiman concluded his statement by extending best wishes to Jenkins for his future endeavors.
Under Jenkins’ leadership, the Grizzlies reached the playoffs in three out of his five full seasons as head coach. The team’s absence from the playoffs in the previous season was largely attributed to a season-ending injury sustained by star player Ja Morant, coupled with other significant injuries affecting crucial members of the team’s rotation.
Potential Replacements for Grizzlies Head Coach
The permanent successor to Taylor Jenkins has not yet been identified. In the interim, Assistant Coach Toumas Iisalo will assume the role of head coach. Iisalo was a recent addition to the coaching staff, having been hired in July.
Jenkins had originally succeeded JB Bickerstaff, who was dismissed after the Grizzlies did not qualify for the playoffs in the 2018-19 season.
