Chris Hemsworth Jokingly Laments Ruined “Friendship” with Billie Eilish After Oscars Encounter
Actor Chris Hemsworth jestingly believes he has jeopardized any potential close bond with pop sensation Billie Eilish following a recent encounter at the Oscars. The Thor star humorously recounted the tale on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Wednesday, March 26, explaining why he thinks a true “friendship” with the 23-year-old singer may now be impossible.
The Selfie That May Have Sealed Their Fate
“I got a photograph with Billie Eilish at the Oscars,” Hemsworth, 41, admitted to host Stephen Colbert. He confessed to an internal debate before approaching Eilish, recalling, “I remember thinking ‘Ah, don’t do it, don’t do it.’”
Parental Pressure for a Celebrity Photo
Despite his initial reservations about bothering Eilish, Hemsworth detailed that he and his wife, actress Elsa Pataky, ultimately decided to request the photograph hoping to impress their children. The couple share daughter India, 12, and twin sons Sasha and Tristan, 11.
“I was like ‘No, my kids are going to love this,’” he confessed. However, the actor immediately regretted the fan-like interaction, joking, “The moment I took it, I was like ‘I went from work colleague to now like a fan.’”
Humorous Declaration of Lost Friendship
Continuing his playful narrative, Hemsworth quipped, “We will never be friends, never be best friends,” suggesting the selfie had downgraded their relationship in his own humorous perception.
The Home and Away alumnus clarified that while he and Eilish have not yet collaborated professionally, they do “bump shoulders” within the entertainment industry.
The Picture in Question
The photograph in question captured Eilish smiling broadly, positioned between Hemsworth and Pataky at the prestigious Academy Awards ceremony.
While this lighthearted selfie incident might have, in Hemsworth’s jest, derailed a potential friendship with Eilish, the Australian actor has openly discussed his genuine close friendships with other prominent figures.

Matt Damon: A True Friend
Hemsworth enjoys a particularly strong bond with actor Matt Damon. Hemsworth and Pataky frequently spend holidays with Damon and his wife, Luciana Barroso.
“We became friends around the time I started to work, and I’ve really benefited from watching how he handles himself,” Hemsworth shared about Damon in a 2020 interview with GQ. “Matt’s just a normal guy who has the movie-star thing figured out.”
Pataky’s Admiration for the Damons
Pataky also holds Damon and Barroso in high regard, expressing her admiration in a previous interview in 2019.
“Chris has been a big fan of Matt Damon, me too, and then when I met his wife, I’m even more of a fan of his wife,” Pataky told People. “They are such amazing people. We have three kids, they have four kids, so we ended up making the same plans because everything we do with our kids, so it’s easier to do things with people that understand you,” she elaborated.
