Kris Marshall Discusses ‘Death in Paradise’ Role Ahead of ‘Beyond Paradise’ Return
Actor Kris Marshall has spoken about his prior role as the lead investigator in the popular BBC program, Death in Paradise, in advance of the anticipated comeback of its sister series, Beyond Paradise. The new season promises fresh mysteries and character development for fans of the crime drama franchise.
Reflecting on Detective Inspector Humphrey Goodman
Marshall famously played DI Humphrey Goodman in Death in Paradise from 2014 to 2017. He later returned to the character in Beyond Paradise, which debuted in 2023 and is now scheduled to reappear on television screens for a third season.
The performer revealed that while he was instantly enthusiastic to undertake the part of DI Goodman when initially presented with the opportunity in 2014, he had, in fact, never viewed Death in Paradise before.
In a frank recent interview, Marshall confessed to the i Paper, “I’m more of a documentaries and sports enthusiast.”
However, his wife, Hannah, was a dedicated follower of the BBC show and ultimately persuaded him to accept the role, despite being pregnant with their first child at the time.
‘Beyond Paradise’ Season 3: What to Expect
Marshall is set to return to television screens in the forthcoming season of Beyond Paradise, which will air on BBC One on Friday, March 28th.
He has hinted at what audiences can anticipate from Humphrey this season, particularly regarding the widespread interest in the DI’s relationship with Martha and the potential obstacles the pair may encounter next.
Discussing the new episodes with Radio Times, Marshall disclosed, “Humphrey and Martha face their own challenges. That specific narrative, where they might have experienced division, has been explored previously. I don’t believe it is necessary to revisit that storyline.”
He added, “Furthermore, I believe Humphrey and Martha are somewhat unique as a central couple within the program, in that they do not experience significant betrayals or conflicts within their relationship.”
New and Returning Faces in Saint Marie
However, series three will introduce some drama for the couple, as Martha’s former partner, Archie Hughes (played by Jamie Bamber), who previously had a physical confrontation with Humphrey, is set to reappear in Saint Marie.
Additional returning cast members include Reverend Kate (Chizzy Akudolu), Josh Woods (Chris Jenks), Nurse Lucy (Eva Feiler), and Hannah (Amalia Vitale).
Beyond Paradise season three will also feature guest appearances from notable actors such as Hugh Dennis, Kevin McNally, Caroline Quentin, Gabby Best, and Steve Oram.
