Nissan Unveils First Look at Next-Generation Micra Supermini
Automaker Nissan has released initial images of its redesigned Micra supermini, marking a significant overhaul for the vehicle two years after the discontinuation of its previous iteration. The all-new Nissan Micra is set to adopt a radical new design direction.
Radical Redesign and Renault Partnership
As the Japanese marque explores new partnerships following previous collaborations, this latest Micra iteration will be heavily based on the Renault 5 E-Tech, which was awarded the European Car of the Year for 2025. The shared platform signals a strategic shift for Nissan in the competitive supermini market.
Design Philosophy: Injecting Nissan DNA
Matthew Weather, Vice President of Design for Nissan Europe, in conversation with Auto Express, described the process of differentiating the new Micra from the retro-inspired Renault as an engaging challenge.
“The Renault 5 provides an excellent starting point,” Weather stated. “Our task was to integrate our distinct brand identity. The final product will unequivocally feel like a Micra, embody the Nissan ethos, and represent an evolution in its market offering.”
Exterior Design: Distinctive Yet Familiar
While the next-generation Nissan Micra shares a similar silhouette with the Renault 5 E-Tech, notable visual distinctions set apart these two superminis. The new Nissan Micra boasts a unique front fascia.

The forthcoming hatchback exhibits a more assertive aesthetic, facilitated by a lowered bonnet line and a concealed front air intake. The intake is camouflaged by black plastic and chrome trim located at the lower section of the bumper, contributing to a streamlined and modern appearance.
Performance and Powertrain: Electric Focus
Nissan has yet to reveal interior imagery or performance details for the new Micra electric vehicle. However, it is confirmed that the hatchback will utilize the same AmpR Small platform as the Renault 5, offering customers a choice of two battery options, emphasizing its commitment to electric mobility.
Battery and Motor Specifications
The standard Micra electric model will feature a 40kWh battery paired with an 118bhp electric motor. This configuration is anticipated to deliver a range of approximately 190 miles on a single charge, with an estimated 0-62mph acceleration time of around nine seconds, mirroring the Renault’s specifications.
Enhanced Range Variant
Premium versions of the Micra EV will offer an upgraded 52kWh battery pack, extending the driving range to nearly 250 miles. These models will also incorporate a more powerful 148bhp motor, promising enhanced acceleration and overall performance for discerning buyers.
Looking Ahead: Micra Launch and Next-Gen Leaf
While consumers await the arrival of the latest Micra in 2026, Nissan has also disclosed information regarding the next generation Leaf. The new Nissan Leaf is expected to debut later this year, signaling another step in Nissan’s electrification strategy.
Leaf Transformation into Crossover
The Nissan Leaf, a pioneering model in the electric vehicle sector, is being reimagined as a crossover. This transformation includes an elevated ride height while maintaining the streamlined styling of the current model, adapting to evolving market preferences.
Platform and Production
The redesigned Nissan Leaf crossover is projected to utilize the same battery technology found in the Ariya SUV, along with sharing its platform. Production of the new Leaf is slated to take place at the company’s Sunderland manufacturing facility in North-East England, reinforcing Nissan’s commitment to UK manufacturing and electric vehicle innovation.
