New Railway Stations Taking Shape on Walsall to Wolverhampton Line in £85 Million Project

Construction of new railway stations at Willenhall and Darlaston is progressing as part of an £85 million initiative to enhance transport infrastructure in the West Midlands. The project, overseen by the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), will introduce new stops on the Walsall to Wolverhampton line, aiming to significantly improve connectivity in the region. These developments will serve areas including Willenhall and Darlaston, the location of Cadbury World, offering improved public transport options.

Construction Progress Report: Willenhall and Darlaston Stations On Track

Project officials confirmed in October that the building of Willenhall station is maintaining “strong progress“, with the overall scheme remaining on schedule. Initial phases included “important groundwork,” preparations for structural elements, and the completion of platform foundations. Further “significant” milestones are anticipated in the coming months as construction advances at both sites.

Authorities have stated that “Both stations remain within budget,” and the WMCA is committed to “delivering these stations efficiently,” recognizing their potential to provide a “crucial boost to the local transport network.”

Navigating Project Challenges to Enhance Connectivity

Project Sponsor Victoria Kinally acknowledged that some obstacles have emerged during the station developments. “We are pleased with the progress made so far on both Willenhall and Darlaston stations,” she stated. “While there have been challenges, our teams are working diligently to keep the project on track and deliver these important stations, which will significantly improve transport connectivity in the region.”

Restoring Rail Links After Over Half a Century

Upon completion, this ambitious scheme will reconnect Willenhall and Darlaston to the national rail network for the first time in more than 50 years. The original stations in these locations were closed in 1965, leaving a gap in local rail provision which this project seeks to address.

Upcoming Road Closures to Facilitate Station Works

Recent construction activities will necessitate some local disruptions, notably a five-month southbound closure affecting Bilston Street and Rose Hill in Willenhall, lasting until August 11.

Traffic diversions will be implemented, and Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) has advised residents to allow additional travel time when planning journeys in the affected areas. From July 18, as the works enter their final stages, Bilston Street will be fully closed during weekends. Bus services will be rerouted to accommodate the road closures. Project leaders have assured residents that access to homes and businesses will be maintained throughout the duration of the works.
