ChatGPT Image Feature Rollout Postponed Due to High Demand

The highly anticipated launch of ChatGPT‘s new AI image generation capabilities for free users has been delayed, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced Wednesday. The postponement is attributed to unexpectedly overwhelming user interest exceeding the company’s initial projections.

Unprecedented Popularity

Altman stated on social media platform X that the image functionalities within ChatGPT have proven “wayyyy more popular” than anticipated, even surpassing their already “pretty high expectations.”

Staged Feature Deployment

Earlier in the week, OpenAI had unveiled the integration of GPT-4o’s native image generation feature. This enhancement allows users to upload and modify visuals, with the company initially indicating its imminent availability across all ChatGPT access tiers. However, as of Wednesday, the feature has only been activated for subscribers of ChatGPT Pro, Plus, and Teams.

Capacity Challenges and Future Solutions

Recently, OpenAI has encountered similar setbacks during product introductions, consistently citing insufficient computational resources as the primary cause. Following the December debut of Sora, OpenAI temporarily suspended new user registrations. The company’s ambitious $500 billion Stargate data center initiative is intended to address these ongoing capacity limitations.
