Investigation Unveils Grisly Details in Death of French Toddler Emile Soleil
Detectives probing the death of French toddler Emile Soleil have disclosed harrowing details regarding the suspected circumstances of the child’s demise. As the round-the-clock investigation continues, authorities seek to unravel the mystery surrounding the toddler’s passing in the Alpine village of Haut-Vernet.
Possibility of External Attack Remains Under Scrutiny
Prosecutor Jean-Luc Bachon informed journalists that investigators are still considering the possibility of an attack by an ‘outside party’ in the disappearance of Emile in July 2023. This line of inquiry remains active as they piece together the events leading to the tragic outcome.
Skull Trauma Suggests Violence
Bachan stated that marks discovered on the skull, recovered in March, indicate ‘possible violent facial trauma.’ This finding is a crucial element in understanding the nature of the injuries sustained by young Emile.
Body Discovered After Suspected Movement
Investigating officers believe that Emile’s skeletal remains were likely moved shortly before their discovery near a river in the Alpine hamlet of Haut-Vernet in March of the previous year. The timing of this movement is a key aspect of the ongoing investigation.
Body’s Condition Raises Questions
Following extensive forensic analysis conducted over several months, authorities have concluded that Emile’s body did not decay naturally within the clothing found a month later. This detail has led experts to explore alternative explanations for the state of the remains.
Potential Staging of Remains Investigated
Confidential reports suggest that experts are exploring the grim possibility that the remains may have been deliberately positioned, indicating potential staging. This aspect adds a disturbing layer to the complexities of the case.
Grandparents’ Custody and Family Inquiry
Bachan’s statements followed the release of Emile’s grandparents, who were responsible for his care when he disappeared from their holiday residence. They had been detained on suspicion of voluntary manslaughter and concealment of a body earlier in the week. The prosecutor clarified that the family inquiry is ‘one of several avenues’ being explored, emphasizing that this investigative path ‘remains open’.
Confrontation and Expert Reports Prompt Arrests
The prosecutor explained that the investigation reached a critical juncture where it became ‘necessary to confront and inform those most impacted’ by the tragedy. The four arrests were made ‘in light of findings from expert analyses,’ he confirmed.

Blood-Coated Planter Yields No New Evidence
Bachan disclosed a setback in the investigation, revealing that a blood-stained planter discovered near the Saint Martin chapel on Sunday ‘did not produce any evidence likely to further the investigations.’ This potential lead unfortunately did not yield actionable information.
Extensive Investigative Efforts Detailed
Colonel Christophe Berthelin stated that approximately 15 investigators have worked daily since Emile’s disappearance in July 2023, dedicated to understanding the circumstances surrounding the child’s fate. More personnel have been added to the team following the discovery of his remains last year, ensuring a comprehensive probe.
Key Investigative Actions:
- 287 witness interviews conducted
- 285 hectares of land searched
- Over 60 expert missions launched to analyze findings
Family Members Released After Questioning
Both officials spoke at a press conference following the release of the grandparents and two of their adult children, who remain unnamed, from custody. In France, detention for questioning is a procedural step in investigations and does not automatically imply that charges will be filed.
The detention period for Philippe and Anne Vedovini, both 59, ended early Thursday morning after 72 hours of questioning concerning Émile Soleil, who was two years old at the time of his death.
The Vedovinis were apprehended in early morning raids on Tuesday, along with two of their adult children, identified as Émile’s aunt and uncle.

Initial Charges and Subsequent Release
All four faced allegations of ‘intentional homicide’ and ‘concealing a corpse’, according to a statement from Aix-en-Provence prosecutors. However, at 5 am on Thursday, all four were released from the secure gendarmerie in Marseille where they had been held.
Priest’s Death Adds Another Layer of Mystery
The enigma surrounding the case deepened with the news that the family’s Roman Catholic priest, who baptised Emile prior to his disappearance, reportedly ‘took his own life’. Father Claude Gilliot, 85, is said to have died from a ‘significant overdose’ last Saturday week at his residence in Aix-en-Provence, according to French media. Reports suggest a potential rift between him and the Vedovinis before his death.
Father Gilliot had openly expressed his emotional distress throughout the ordeal. He had been close to Émile’s grandparents and two of their adult children, offering spiritual guidance, including Mass services and Confession.
The relationship reportedly strained after Father Gilliot shared a photograph of Émile with the media in an effort to aid in the search for the missing child.

A public disagreement ensued between Father Gilliot and Émile’s grandfather, with reports of heated exchanges, leading to the family’s decision to stop attending services at the Aix-en-Provence chapel where Father Gilliot presided.
Speaking after her client’s release, Mr. Vedovini’s lawyer, Isabelle Colombani, stated, ‘After 17 hours of questioning, the detention has been lifted. This comes as a relief to them and their legal team. I was never overly concerned as I believed we could clarify any ambiguities.’
Julien Pinelli, Ms. Vedovini’s defense lawyer, added, ‘My client’s release from custody is, understandably, a great relief. She is now free.’ He noted that Émile’s grandmother ‘willingly participated in what was understandably a trying process, as she viewed it as her contribution to the ongoing investigation, the outcomes of which she now awaits.’
As of now, there has been no immediate statement from Aix-en-Provence prosecutors or the judicial police leading the investigation.
Authorities could have initially held the family members for up to 72 hours and retain the option to renew custody at any point as the inquiry progresses.
Sources connected to the inquiry verified that the Vedovinis, who were caring for Émile at the time of his disappearance, were arrested following months of police surveillance through wiretaps. Secret recordings of conversations between them and other family members were obtained, along with comprehensive background checks into their lives.

Mr. Vedovini previously acknowledged ‘fifteen minutes of inattention’ around the time of Émile’s disappearance. The search for the child concluded with the discovery of Emile’s remains in March 2024 by a hiker. A witness reported seeing Mr. Vedovini cutting wood outside his home around the estimated time Émile wandered away from the Haut-Vernet property.
Separately, Mr. Vedovini is under scrutiny in an unrelated case concerning allegations of sex abuse at a Roman Catholic School dating back to the 1990s. During his time at Riaumont, a Catholic community with a boarding school for troubled youth in Northern France, where he trained to be a monk and was known as Brother Philippe, Mr. Vedovini denies any misconduct.
He later chose to leave monastic life to marry Anne Vedovini. Both remain committed Roman Catholics and are parents to 10 children, including Émile’s mother, Marie Soleil (née Vedovini). Emile’s father is Colomban Soleil, 27.
Emile’s parents have not been arrested in connection to the ongoing homicide investigation into their son’s death.
