Russian strikes show Moscow does not want ‘real peace’, says Zelenskyy

Ukraine Accuses Russia of Insincerity Amidst Drone Assault Following Ceasefire Talks

Kyiv has asserted that Moscow’s commitment to peaceful resolution is questionable after a substantial drone attack occurred merely a day following a provisional agreement on a maritime truce. This accord was reportedly tied to the easing of agricultural sanctions on Russia. Ukraine‘s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the overnight drone attacks, stating they undermine recent peace negotiations. Despite the agreed-upon framework for a ceasefire, the renewed hostilities cast doubts on Russia’s genuine desire for de-escalation in the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict.

Drone Strikes Follow Peace Negotiation Progress

President Zelenskyy conveyed his dismay, stating that these nationwide strikes, launched immediately after peace talks, expose Russia’s true intentions. Conversely, the Kremlin maintains that the US-facilitated discussions are progressing in a constructive manner.

Casualties and Damage from Overnight Attacks

Regional governors reported fatalities and injuries across Ukraine as a result of the overnight incursions, with four individuals confirmed dead and six wounded. Ukraine‘s Air Force reported intercepting 56 of the 117 incoming unmanned aerial vehicles. An additional 48 were identified as decoys and did not inflict damage.

Zelenskyy’s Condemnation and Russia’s Rebuttal

Taking to social media platform X, Zelenskyy declared, “Last night, there were another 117 proofs in our skies of how Russia continues to prolong this war.” He added, “Commencing such extensive attacks subsequent to ceasefire negotiations sends a distinct message globally that Moscow is not dedicated to pursuing genuine peace.”

In response, Russia’s defense ministry alleged that Ukraine attempted to strike Russian energy infrastructure overnight. They specified targets including a gas storage facility in Crimea and electricity transmission infrastructure within the Bryansk border region.

The Russian ministry further stated, “Consequently, the Kyiv regime, while persisting in damaging Russian civilian energy infrastructure, is effectively undermining the agreements achieved” by negotiators representing Russia and the US. Independent verification of these claims was not immediately available.

Details of Ceasefire Negotiations

Recent parallel discussions in Saudi Arabia, involving Russia and the US, as well as the US and Ukraine, reportedly resulted in an understanding to implement a ceasefire in the Black Sea. Furthermore, a provisional 30-day cessation of strikes targeting energy infrastructure, previously agreed upon in principle by both Ukrainian and Russian leaders, was also under discussion.

However, the Kremlin emphasized that Russia’s agreement to the ceasefire is contingent upon the US facilitating improved access for Russian exports of food and fertilizer, alongside the reinstatement of state agricultural bank Rosselkhozbank to the SWIFT payment system. The US has indicated it is examining the Russian request.

Kremlin’s Positive Assessment of Talks

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov conveyed a positive assessment of the discussions during a press briefing on Wednesday. “We are pleased with the pragmatic and constructive trajectory of our dialogue and the resulting outcomes,” he stated.

Peskov further mentioned that a catalog of Russian and Ukrainian targets to be encompassed by the energy moratorium had been established with the assistance of US negotiators, a point previously announced by Zelenskyy. The Ukrainian leader had indicated that the energy ceasefire was anticipated to take effect from today.

Trump’s Perspective on Peacemaking

Donald Trump has consistently advocated for a complete cessation of hostilities in Ukraine. During his campaign, he asserted he could bring the war to a close within 24 hours, although he subsequently characterized this statement as “somewhat sarcastic.”

Modest Progress and Lingering Doubts

To date, the parallel negotiations conducted in Riyadh have yielded relatively limited outcomes. They have also prompted questions regarding the feasibility of a comprehensive ceasefire, given the deep-seated mistrust between Moscow and Kyiv and the ongoing clashes.

The US president even expressed uncertainty about Putin’s current commitment to a peace agreement. “I believe Russia desires to see it concluded, but it’s possible they are delaying,” Trump remarked in a televised interview.

He elaborated, “I have done it over time, you know; I might not want to finalize a contract, preferring to remain engaged, but perhaps not fully intending to proceed… I am uncertain. But no, I believe Russia would prefer to see it end, and I believe Zelenskyy would also prefer to see it end at this juncture,” he conveyed to Newsmax.

Ukraine’s Stance and Moscow’s Focus

Ukraine‘s approach involves actively participating in discussions, demonstrating a willingness to consent to interim ceasefire proposals. This strategy aims to shift the onus for peace onto Russia, anticipating further preconditions from the Kremlin.

Conversely, Moscow’s attention appears to be directed towards what concessions it can secure from the US. Trump has acknowledged US discussions with the Kremlin concerning a potential partition of Ukrainian territory. Zelenskyy affirmed on Tuesday that no such negotiations have transpired with Ukraine.
