Pentagon ‘Mystified’ by Persistent Drone Sightings Over Military Installations
The Pentagon remains ‘mystified’ by ongoing reports of drones operating near sensitive military sites and critical infrastructure, a US senator has disclosed. These unidentified aerial systems have prompted national security concerns, particularly after numerous incidents involving swarms of drones over key locations.
Mysterious Drone Activity Sparks Security Concerns
In December, multiple sightings of nocturnal drone flights in northern New Jersey triggered alarm among both civilians and security agencies. These unexplained drone incidents initially occurred near Picatinny Arsenal, a prominent military research and development complex, and above former President Donald Trump’s golf club in Bedminster.
UK Air Bases Also Targeted by Unidentified Drones
Prior to the New Jersey events, another cluster of unidentified drones was observed in November above three US air bases in the United Kingdom. These UK bases are known locations for the storage of American nuclear weapons, raising further questions about potential espionage or security breaches.
Senator Suggests Potential Foreign Espionage
Senator Roger Wicker, head of the Armed Services Committee, has revealed that defense officials are still perplexed by these recurring drone appearances. Wicker speculated that these incidents might represent a form of foreign espionage, indicating a serious national security concern.
Classified Briefings Indicate Official Bewilderment
During a recent interview, Senator Wicker stated, “Clearly, there is a military intelligence aspect to this.” He acknowledged the logical assumption that these drones could be ‘spying incursions’ and affirmed that other Pentagon officials share this assessment.
“I can tell you, I am privy to classified briefings at the highest level,” Wicker added. “I think the Pentagon and the National Security advisors are still mystified.”
Pattern of Drone Incursions Across US Military Bases
Beginning last October, a pattern of unexplained drone activity emerged, seemingly targeting US military bases globally. The initial incident involved a drone swarm over Langley Air Force Base in Virginia.
Langley Air Force Base and Subsequent Incidents
Following the drone sightings at Langley, several F-22 fighter jets stationed there were temporarily relocated to a nearby air base as a precautionary measure. This incident was followed by similar drone activity reported at New Jersey’s Picatinny Arsenal on November 18, establishing a concerning pattern.
International US Bases Grapple with Drone Sightings
Within a week of the Picatinny Arsenal incident, US bases in England and Germany began experiencing incursions of “small unmanned aerial systems“. These simultaneous events at geographically dispersed locations suggested a coordinated and concerning trend.
Continued Drone Activity at Additional Military Sites
Subsequent drone incidents were reported at a Navy weapons station, also in New Jersey, and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, which temporarily closed its airspace on December 13 due to drone activity. Sightings were also confirmed at a base in Texas on December 18, indicating a nationwide issue.
Calls for Investigation and Concerns over Russian Links
A former UK security minister recently called for an “urgent investigation” into the drone activity over US air bases in England. These calls intensified after reports emerged suggesting potential links between the drone sightings and Russia.
British Troops Assist in Investigation
Approximately 60 British troops were deployed to assist the US Air Force in investigating the November 2024 drone incidents at UK bases, underscoring the seriousness of the matter and the international collaboration required.
Espionage Concerns and Foreign National Involvement
An investigative report highlighted the movements of individuals with alleged connections to the Kremlin during the drone sightings. This evidence raised suspicions of potential Russian state involvement in the drone operations.
Growing Threat of Drone Espionage
Former FBI agent and military analyst Ken Gray has warned about the increasing threat of foreign nationals utilizing drone technology for espionage against the US. Gray believes this threat is likely to persist and expand.
Drones as Potential Weapon Systems
Citing the utilization of drones in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Gray cautioned that these devices also “pose a real risk of being used as a weapon system against targets.” He emphasized the dual-use nature of drone technology, posing both surveillance and offensive threats.
Hobby Drones Modified for Nefarious Purposes
Gray pointed out that even readily available “hobby-level drones” can be modified to carry hazardous materials or devices, including explosives. This accessibility and adaptability of drones increase the complexity of defense and security measures.
Government Response and Drone Operation Challenges
Gray noted that the government’s response to drone sightings is not uniform and is contingent on the location of the unidentified aerial system. Furthermore, he highlighted the significant challenge in pinpointing the operator’s location, complicating efforts to counter these drone activities.
US General Raises Alarm Over Drone Threat to Military Installations
The top general overseeing air defenses across the US and Canada recently addressed Congress, expressing concern about the origin and intent of drone swarms reported across the nation. General Gregory M. Guillot, commander of NORTHCOM and NORAD, indicated that there were as many as 350 drone detections over military installations last year.
Surveillance and Detection of Sensitive Capabilities
“The primary threat I see for them… is detection, and perhaps surveillance, of sensitive capabilities on our installations,” General Guillot cautioned. This statement underscores the potential for drones to compromise sensitive military information through unauthorized observation.
Federal Agencies Granted Counter-Drone Authority
In response to growing concerns about drone threats to military personnel and defense infrastructure, Congress recently authorized several federal agencies to implement countermeasures against credible drone threats. This legislative action signifies a proactive step in addressing the evolving drone challenge.
Prosecution for Unauthorized Drone Operation
Gray emphasized that individuals who operate drones over “restricted space” could face legal prosecution, reinforcing the legal ramifications for unauthorized drone activity in sensitive areas. This legal aspect aims to deter future incursions and maintain airspace security.
