More than two decades after the release of The Passion of the Christ, Mel Gibson is returning to direct the highly anticipated sequel, The Resurrection of the Christ. The film will see Jim Caviezel reprise his role as Jesus.
Filming to Commence in Rome
While Gibson initially aimed to commence shooting next year, recent reports indicate that filming is now scheduled to begin this summer. According to Variety, The Resurrection of the Christ will be filmed at Rome’s Cinecittà Studios in August. Notably, The Passion of the Christ was also filmed at this location. Additionally, filming will take place in Matera, Italy, a location featured in the opening scenes of the James Bond film ‘No Time To Die’.
Returning Cast Members
Jim Caviezel is set to return as Jesus in The Resurrection of the Christ. Alongside a digitally de-aged Caviezel, Maia Morgenstern and Francesco De Vito are expected to return as Mary and Peter, respectively.
Plot and Narrative
The screenplay for The Resurrection of the Christ was penned by Randall Wallace, from ‘Braveheart’, which Gibson has described as a “crazy acid trip,” focusing on the events after Christ’s emergence from the Empty Tomb and exploring intense spiritual conflicts. The narrative of this forthcoming epic will span from Satan’s rebellion and the Fall of Man in Genesis to the death of the Apostle John, the author of the Book of Revelation. The movie is also anticipated to depict the Harrowing of Hell, where Christ descended into Hades to “preach to the spirits in prison” (1 Peter 3:19).
Anticipated Release Window
Upon its initial release, The Passion of the Christ became the highest-grossing independent film ever, earning $612 million globally. With The Resurrection of the Christ scheduled to film this summer, it is anticipated to be released in cinemas for Easter 2027.
