Microsoft adds AI-powered deep research tools to Copilot

Microsoft Integrates Advanced AI Research Tools into Microsoft 365 Copilot

Microsoft is integrating sophisticated, “deep research” artificial intelligence capabilities into Microsoft 365 Copilot, its innovative AI chatbot application. This advancement places Microsoft at the forefront of a burgeoning trend in AI-driven research tools.

Rise of Deep Research AI Agents

Recently, a wave of deep research agents has emerged across various chatbot platforms, including industry leaders such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and xAI’s Grok. These powerful tools are driven by advanced reasoning AI models. These models are designed with the capacity to methodically analyze complex problems and perform self-fact-checking, abilities considered crucial for conducting comprehensive investigations into diverse subjects.

Introducing Researcher and Analyst

Microsoft’s specific implementations of these deep research agents are designated “Researcher” and “Analyst.”

Researcher: Deep Dive Investigations

Researcher leverages OpenAI’s advanced deep research model – the same technology underpinning OpenAI’s ChatGPT research tool. It combines this with “advanced orchestration” and “deep search capabilities.” Microsoft asserts that Researcher is capable of undertaking in-depth analyses, such as formulating go-to-market strategies and generating quarterly reports for clients. This tool aims to provide users with comprehensive research assistance directly within their workflow.

Analyst: Advanced Data Analysis Prowess

Analyst, in contrast, is built upon OpenAI’s o3-mini reasoning model. Microsoft states it is specifically “optimized to perform advanced data analysis.” Analyst operates iteratively, systematically refining its analytical process to deliver detailed and insightful answers to intricate queries. Furthermore, Analyst possesses the capability to execute Python code, enabling it to tackle complex data inquiries. Microsoft also emphasizes the transparency of Analyst, allowing users to inspect its analytical “work” for verification.

vCard QR Code

vCard.red is a free platform for creating a mobile-friendly digital business cards. You can easily create a vCard and generate a QR code for it, allowing others to scan and save your contact details instantly.

The platform allows you to display contact information, social media links, services, and products all in one shareable link. Optional features include appointment scheduling, WhatsApp-based storefronts, media galleries, and custom design options.

Unique Access to Data Sources

A distinguishing feature of Microsoft’s deep research tools compared to competitors is their ability to access both proprietary work data and information from the broader internet. For instance, Researcher can utilize third-party data connectors to access data from various AI “agents,” applications, and platforms like Confluence, ServiceNow, and Salesforce. This expanded data access potentially offers a more holistic and integrated research experience.

Addressing the Challenge of Accuracy

A key consideration for deep research tools like Researcher and Analyst is ensuring accuracy and minimizing the risk of generating inaccurate or fabricated information, commonly known as “hallucinations.” While models like o3-mini and deep research represent significant advancements, they are not infallible. These models can occasionally misattribute sources, arrive at flawed conclusions, or draw upon questionable online sources to inform their reasoning processes. Microsoft is likely focused on mitigating these challenges to ensure the reliability of these powerful tools.

Frontier Program: Early Access to Cutting-Edge AI

Microsoft is introducing a new Frontier program to provide Microsoft 365 Copilot subscribers with early access to Researcher and Analyst. Participants in the Frontier program, designed to be the first to experience experimental Copilot features, will gain access to Researcher and Analyst starting in April. This initiative underscores Microsoft’s commitment to rapidly deploying and iterating on its AI innovations.
