David Archuleta Embraces New Era of Self-Expression and Sexuality
David Archuleta, the celebrated musician, is embarking on a vibrant and liberated phase, embracing his identity as a queer individual and stepping away from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He characterizes this period as a “fun, flirty era,” marking a significant shift in his personal and artistic journey.
Embracing Sensuality and Self-Assurance
“I am enjoying being more sensory, more connected with my physical being and my sexuality, and simply feeling self-assured in my identity,” Archuleta, 34, revealed in an exclusive interview with Us Weekly at the Human Rights Campaign Gala on Saturday, March 22, held at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles. “Developing this sense of self takes time, but it’s incredibly liberating.”
Journey from Mormon Faith to Self-Discovery
The American Idol star was raised in Utah within the LDS faith and served as a Mormon missionary in 2011. After publicly identifying as part of the LGBTQIA+ community in 2021, Archuleta made the decision to leave the religious organization the following year. Since then, Archuleta has been navigating the process of embracing his sensuality, contrasting with his upbringing in a “conservative, modest household and culture.”
Reclaiming Personal Expression
“It’s generally discouraged. It’s often frowned upon because discussing sex is considered taboo,” Archuleta explained to Us Weekly, describing the cultural norms of his childhood. “Talking about sensuality is deemed inappropriate, disrespectful; your body is a temple, and the expectation is to be very reserved. Now that I am no longer practicing Mormonism, I feel a sense of freedom to explore who I am, even if it challenges some people’s perceptions.”

“Creme Brûlée” and Evolving Artistic Identity
Archuleta’s recent single, “Creme Brûlée,” released earlier this year, exemplifies this newfound expressive approach, featuring a more suggestive and playful essence.
“It’s not about being overtly explicit. It’s about being in tune with oneself,” Archuleta clarified regarding the song’s concept. “Sexuality is a fundamental aspect of the human experience, and it deserves open conversation. Growing up, the message was ‘no sex before marriage’ and extreme modesty even in dating. Now, as consenting adults, exploring intimacy within respectful relationships is a healthy part of life.”
Sharing His Story and Advocating for Acceptance
Archuleta further elaborated on his motivation to share his experiences with sexuality and religion publicly.
“I realized that my narrative resonates with many individuals whose voices have been marginalized or overlooked, particularly within the Mormon community,” the singer stated. “Queer individuals have always existed and will continue to exist, regardless of acknowledgement. There will always be LGBTQIA+ youth, and fostering greater acceptance and inclusivity within religious spaces is crucial.”
Perspectives on Modern Mormon Representation
While Archuleta has transitioned away from the LDS community, he acknowledges the positive aspects of contemporary media depictions, such as The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, in bringing Mormonism into broader public awareness.
“I’ve heard that it’s introducing Mormonism to a wider audience, which I find truly interesting,” Archuleta commented, mentioning he has not yet viewed the Hulu docuseries. “It’s valuable to examine both the strengths and weaknesses of the culture and encourage introspection on traditions and customs that may benefit from reevaluation as seen by those outside of the faith.”
Focus on Personal Growth and Creative Expression
Currently, Archuleta is dedicated to embracing a “new state” of being, one characterized by greater self-acceptance and comfort with his sexuality. This renewed sense of self is also evident in the “Creme Brûlée” music video, which celebrates his Latin heritage alongside his evolving artistic persona.
“The ‘Crème Brulée’ video production was incredibly enjoyable, featuring choreography and a fresh creative outlet for me,” he shared in a March press release. “Movement and dance have always resonated with me, and through choreography classes, I’ve discovered a powerful means of liberation and self-expression. Collaborating with Aidan, Jordan, and Nathan Kim exposed me to a new style that was deeply fulfilling. Dancing provides a newfound confidence and enhances my connection to my body and sensuality.”
