Jaime King Addresses Landlord Dispute and Custody Concerns
Actress Jaime King has publicly spoken out amidst ongoing legal challenges, including a custody dispute and a disagreement with her landlord.
Landlord Lawsuit Resolved
In January, Sheila Irani, King’s landlord, initiated legal action against the actress for allegedly failing to pay rent. Court documents indicated that King owed approximately $42,580 in overdue rent, according to reports from Us Weekly.
This legal contention led to King’s departure from the rental property.
King confirmed to the publication that the issue with her landlord has been resolved privately. However, she expressed her disappointment with the landlord’s actions, characterizing them as an attempt to seek undue attention.
“The situation with my landlord was resolved privately,” King stated to Us Weekly on Monday. “It’s disappointing — but not surprising — to see someone try to exploit this moment for attention.”

King emphasized her priorities, stating, “I am currently focused on what matters most: my children.” King shares two sons, James, 11, and Leo, nine, with her former husband, Kyle Newman. Notably, she selected her close friend, Taylor Swift, as her son Leo’s godmother in 2015.
Supervised Visits and Rehab Mandate
This statement marks King’s first public remarks since a judge decreed that her visits with her sons must be supervised until she completes a six-month rehabilitation program for drug and alcohol issues.
According to the landlord’s lawsuit, obtained by Us Weekly, King had allegedly not paid rent since January.

The monthly rent for the property was $10,145, and King had been residing there since April 2023, when the lease agreement was signed.
Irani claimed to have locked King out of the residence due to the unpaid rent and further alleged that King was “maliciously” remaining on the property unlawfully.
In a revised court motion, King’s legal representative refuted Irani’s claims, asserting that the actress had been actively pursuing acting roles to settle the outstanding debt.
However, the documents also acknowledged “setbacks” hindering her progress, including a recent evacuation from her home due to wildfires in Los Angeles.
The ongoing custody battle with Kyle Newman regarding their two sons, Leo and James, was also cited as a source of “distraction.”
“[King] has repeatedly informed [Irani] of her intention to pay the overdue rent and vacate the premises before the lease concludes. She has been making diligent efforts to secure the necessary funds, but has faced continuous obstacles and difficulties due to the Los Angeles wildfires, which approached within 800 feet of her home, necessitating her evacuation following mandatory orders in the Nichols Canyon fire,” court documents stated.
Furthermore, King’s lawyer added that she is “involved in active litigation concerning the custody of her children.”
King’s legal team further argued that Irani was “fully aware” of the potential detrimental impact an eviction could have on the actress’s custody case.
“[The custody battle] has been profoundly stressful and disruptive to her work, a fact [Irani] is fully cognizant of, understanding that an eviction would be detrimental to [King’s] custody matter,” they added.
Settlement and Move-Out Agreement
The parties have since reached a settlement. Agreements stipulate that Jaime King would vacate the property by March 22, 2025.
“King acknowledges that any delay in meeting the March 22, 2025 move-out deadline will inflict significant and immeasurable damages on Irani, including, but not limited to, the inability to rent the premises to a new tenant commencing on April 1, 2025,” the documents stated. “Accordingly, King has agreed to pay Irani an additional sum of $1,000 per day for each day or part of a day of delayed occupancy.”

Reports indicate King vacated the residence earlier in March, and photographs surfaced showing her remaining possessions being removed from the property, according to The Sun.
Real estate records indicate that King’s former rental property was quickly leased to new tenants for $11,900 per month, just one week after being listed on the market.
According to a source close to the actress, known for her role in Pearl Harbor, she was compelled to “downsize” and “find somewhere cheaper,” as reported by The Sun.
The insider elaborated, “She has been struggling financially for years after some unsuccessful film projects, but the custody battle and defending herself against accusations in court have depleted her financial resources.”
“She relocated to a smaller residence just this month.”

Custody Ruling and Personal Struggles
Sources also revealed that the recent custody ruling has “shattered” the actress’s world.
The source explained, “Now that the details are public, it has made everything more challenging. It creates difficulties in both personal and professional relationships.”
“She is taking it extremely hard, to say the least. She has been battling personal issues for decades, but her recent difficulties have been exacerbated by family problems, career challenges, and financial strain.”
“And I’m sure there are other things people aren’t even aware of; she tends to be private about her struggles.”
The Sun’s report followed a judge’s decision to grant Newman sole physical custody of their two sons, according to court documents obtained by People.
The children will reside with Newman, who will have final legal custody decisions, while both parents will officially share legal custody amidst the contentious legal proceedings.
The judge stipulated that King’s visits with her sons must be supervised until she completes a mandated drug/alcohol program, estimated to last approximately six months.

Past Legal Battles and Allegations
King, recognized for her role in the 2004 comedy “White Chicks,” has been involved in repeated court appearances with her ex-husband over the past five years concerning custody issues.
Most recently, King, who has also appeared in films like “My Bloody Valentine” (2009) and “Sin City” (2005), filed an emergency request with the court.
King’s request sought to modify their child and spousal support agreement from two years prior, People reported.
King “lacks the ability to pay the support,” her attorneys stated in legal documents, while Newman contended that King had “been non-compliant with the court’s child and spousal support orders for well over a year.”
Newman informed the court that King would not “sign a judgment” in their divorce agreement and that she did not have the legal right to “rescind” any of the court’s orders, the outlet reported.
Divorce and Domestic Violence Petition
The former couple initially married in 2007 at Greystone Park and Manor in Los Angeles.
King initiated divorce proceedings in May 2020, seeking to end their 13-year marriage.
Concurrently, King filed court documents requesting an emergency motion regarding custody and visitation matters, as well as a petition for a domestic violence restraining order.
Newman’s representative at the time denied the allegations in a statement: “This is another malicious, failed attempt by Kyle to continue his abuse of Jaime and manipulate the court system.”
“Today, Kyle’s requests for emergency orders were denied, and the judge granted Jaime shared legal custody of their two children. The temporary domestic violence restraining order remains in place to protect Jaime.”
Substance Abuse Accusations
Amid the custody dispute, King stated in May 2020 that Newman had staged an “intervention” for her four months prior, informing family and friends about her alleged substance abuse issues.
King stated in legal documents that she attended a facility to undergo testing and be cleared as drug and alcohol-free. She claimed she was discharged home days later after passing a substance abuse test.
Newman, in his legal filings at the time, asserted that King is “a chronic drug addict and alcoholic who refuses to acknowledge her problem, let alone seek meaningful treatment.”
Newman also told the court in a filing that “several friends” informed him that she had used narcotics during both pregnancies. He further claimed that doctors told him their son Leo “was also addicted due to her continued drug use.”
He expressed he “was devastated” to learn at the same medical appointment “that Leo Thames had a congenital heart defect and would require surgery to survive soon after birth.”
Newman alleged in his court filing instances where King had driven “under the influence” with their children in the car, People reported.
He stated King became “so intoxicated in front of them that they thought their mother was dying and abandoning them for days at a time to get drunk and high instead of caring for them.”
He further added, “At one point, Jaime left Leo Thames at his doctor’s appointment with the nanny, only to be found over half an hour later at the liquor store across the street purchasing a bottle of alcohol.”
