Notably, one of our 3D modelers, a former chef responsible for meal designs, ensured the dishes are beautifully presented.

Hobbit dwellings are characterized by their non-linear, gently curving forms, lacking strict right angles. Implementing a grid-based system felt incongruous with this organic aesthetic. Instead, we aimed to create a system promoting extensive personal expression, enabling players to fine-tune arrangements and position items precisely as desired. Objects can be placed atop tables, within or on bookshelves, and repositioned collectively. This design emphasizes freedom of creativity above all else.

Maintaining fidelity to Tolkien’s universe was paramount. Consequently, the game’s timeline is set shortly after ‘The Hobbit’ and precedes ‘The Lord of the Rings’. Our artists meticulously researched family lineages, historical events, and established lore, integrating these elements throughout the game’s framework.

The undertaking is both profoundly daunting and incredibly stimulating. The allure of written works lies in their ability to ignite imagination. My personal interpretations have inevitably diverged in certain aspects, and the freedom to explore alternative perspectives is truly enriching.

A Haven of Peace: Player Experience Goals

Interviewer: How do you envision players feeling when they engage with the game, irrespective of their familiarity with ‘The Lord of the Rings’?

My aspiration is for the narrative to stand independently. Prior Tolkien knowledge isn’t essential for enjoyment, although numerous subtle references are present for enthusiasts. This project originated during the COVID pandemic—a period marked by widespread stress and unease. Our aim was for the game to serve as a sanctuary of calm and leisure. Hence, “The Shire meets a cozy game”. We concluded that a central theme revolving around cooking and community resonated most effectively with this intent.

Discovering Hidden Depths: Worldbuilding and Easter Eggs

Interviewer: Are there specific details within the game you encourage players to notice?

We dedicated considerable effort to incorporating numerous subtle easter eggs and enriching details, drawing from extensive research into the world’s history. While these elements are understated, worldbuilding received significant focus. When presented with an asset to design or an artifact to create, the process extends beyond visual appeal. Questions arise concerning ownership, origin, creation methods, and the historical context of its era. This in-depth questioning informs the creation of each element, imbuing it with authenticity and a sense of place. We endeavored to apply this meticulous approach throughout the entire project.

This IP profoundly impacted my childhood, igniting my fascination with goblins, dragons, and related fantasy elements—ultimately shaping my career path. Crucially, we strived to create a game that would meet with Tolkien’s approval. He expressed a desire for others to enrich his world, akin to a living mythology, and we aspire to contribute to that ongoing expansion.
