Older drivers ‘at risk’ of dangerous condition in road safety warning

Driving Safety Alert: Experts Warn of Vision Condition Affecting Older Motorists

Concerns are growing regarding a potential vision condition affecting senior drivers, which could compromise road safety. The Older Drivers Forum has cautioned that mature motorists are susceptible to decreased eyesight, with some facing the possibility of developing “tunnel vision,” a condition that narrows the field of vision and heightens the risk of road hazards.

The Dangers of Tunnel Vision for Drivers

Tunnel vision, medically known as peripheral vision loss, significantly impacts driving ability. When motorists experience a restriction in their side vision, they may struggle to perceive critical hazards approaching from their periphery. This visual impairment can lead to perilous situations, increasing the likelihood of collisions with pedestrians, other vehicles, or roadside obstacles.

Older Drivers Forum Highlights Vision Risks

The Older Drivers Forum has issued guidance on this critical issue:

“As individuals age, their field of vision can diminish, potentially leading to severe tunnel vision.”

“This condition can make operating a vehicle hazardous. The reduction in peripheral vision means drivers may not detect hazards emerging from the side until it is dangerously late.”

“All drivers should proactively request a ‘Field of Vision’ assessment during their routine eyesight test, as this specific check is not always included as standard practice.”

Current UK Driving Licence and Eyesight Regulations

In the UK, mandatory eyesight tests are not required for driving licence renewal at age 70. This means older individuals are not legally obligated to undergo vision checks to maintain their driving privileges.

DVLA Guidelines on Vision Standards

However, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) mandates that all road users must declare any medical conditions, including impaired eyesight, that could affect their driving capability.

Current regulations stipulate that drivers must possess a visual acuity of at least 0.5 decimal (6/12) on the Snellen scale, a standard measure of visual sharpness. The DVLA clarifies that this requirement can be met with the aid of glasses or contact lenses.

Despite these regulations, the gradual nature of eyesight deterioration can make it challenging for motorists to self-assess when their vision reaches a dangerously low level.

Calls for Enhanced Vision Testing for Senior Drivers

Advocacy groups have consistently proposed mandatory eyesight testing for drivers at age 70 and upon each driving licence renewal thereafter. However, formal proposals have not yet been implemented.

Expert Recommendation for Regular Vision Assessments

Rob Heard, Founder of the Older Drivers Forum, has previously championed the implementation of eyesight assessments prior to driving licence renewal as a proactive measure.

He stated:

“Upon reaching the age of 70, instead of merely confirming fitness to drive by ticking a box, individuals should actively consider their vision and undergo a professional assessment.”

“Introducing mandatory vision assessments with each licence renewal at 70 and beyond is a sensible approach to enhance road safety.”
