'I found secret room in my house and history is terrifying'

Homeowner Astonished by Hidden Chamber Discovery in Historic Residence

Renovations of a Grade II listed holiday home took an unexpected turn when a woman unearthed a concealed room, revealing a chilling history. Abi, known on TikTok as @abihookwayproperty, shared her惊诧 (astonishment) upon discovering a secret trap door during the refurbishment project.

Unexpected Discovery During Renovation

In her online video, Abi pointed to an upper window of the property, explaining, “You see that window up there? It doesn’t correspond to a room because it actually illuminates a priest hole.” She elaborated on the historical context, stating, “Historically, during periods of priest persecution, this space would serve as a refuge to conceal a priest.” The video then transitions to Abi exploring the newly found space within her home.

Priest Hole’s Chilling Past Unveiled

Ascending to the top floor, Abi proceeded to clear a cabinet and lift the carpet, exposing floorboards. She then opened a small, discreet door within the floorboards, revealing a compact, subterranean chamber, now populated by spiders and cobwebs. This secret room, or priest hole, is a stark reminder of a turbulent period in history.

A Relic of Religious Persecution

The 16th century was a time when religious convictions carried life-or-death consequences. Historic UK explains that these hiding places, known as ‘priest’s holes,’ were intentionally integrated into certain residences as safeguards against potential raids. These covert spaces were predominantly constructed between the 1550s and the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, a significant event led by Catholics.

Life and Death in Hiding

According to historical accounts, “Priest holes were incorporated into various parts of houses, such as fireplaces, attics, and staircases. Often, these constructions were accompanied by other structural alterations to avoid detection.” These hidden chambers were typically diminutive, offering barely enough space to stand or move. During a raid, a priest would be forced to remain motionless and silent, potentially for days. The conditions within these spaces were dire. “Food and water were scarce, and sanitation was non-existent. Tragically, some priests perished within priest holes due to starvation or lack of oxygen.”

Meanwhile, “priest-hunters,” or “pursuivants,” employed meticulous methods to locate these concealed spaces. They would compare external and internal measurements of the house, scrutinize the number of windows from both perspectives, tap on walls to identify hollow sections, and dismantle floorboards in their searches.”

Social Media Reacts to Eerie Revelation

Online audiences have responded with intense interest to the somber history unearthed by Abi’s discovery. Numerous users shared their reactions in the comments section. One commenter expressed, “OMG that’s so crazy.” Another user commended Abi’s bravery, stating, “You brave girl.” A third commenter conveyed excitement, “That’s such an exciting find!” These reactions underscore the enduring fascination with historic discoveries and concealed aspects of the past.
