Trump Demands Removal of His Portrait from Colorado Capitol
Former President Donald Trump has broadened his list of public figures he has publicly feuded with to include an unexpected target: a painting of himself.
This past Sunday, Trump utilized his social media platform, Truth Social, to launch a tirade against his official portrait displayed within the Colorado State Capitol. He further demanded that the state’s governor take action to remove the artwork.
“Distorted” and “Bad” Depiction, Claims Trump
In an extensive post, Trump asserted, “While nobody appreciates an unflattering picture or painting, the portrait in Colorado, situated in the State Capitol alongside those of other Presidents and placed there by the Governor, is purposefully distorted to an unprecedented degree.”
He went on to state that he “would far prefer the absence of any portrait to the presence of this particular one.”
Governor’s Office Responds with Mild Amusement
Shelby Wieman, spokesperson for Colorado Governor Jared Polis, a Democrat, issued a response indicating that the governor “expressed surprise upon learning of the former President of the United States’s keen interest in the Colorado State Capitol and its collection of art.”

She also mentioned that the Capitol’s art collection includes portraits of previous presidents and governors of the state.
Portrait Artist Previously Commissioned for Obama and Bush
The artist behind the contested portrait, Sarah Boardman, is noted for her work featuring numerous prominent individuals. Her website showcases portraits of former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush among her creations.
Interestingly, Trump remarked in his online post that Obama’s portrait “appears wonderful.”
Artwork Commissioned and Unveiled in 2019
According to Boardman’s website, the portrait of Donald Trump is rendered in oil on canvas and was presented in 2019. Boardman notes on her site that she “was honored to receive the commission” for Trump’s likeness.
In a caption accompanying the portrait online, Boardman expressed gratitude: “Thank you to all the dignitaries, staff, donors, and visitors who attended and contributed to making it a truly memorable event!” This statement referred to the portrait’s public unveiling.
As of now, Boardman has not responded to requests for comments regarding the former president’s remarks.
