Katie Thurston’s Breast Cancer Treatment Temporarily Halted Amid Liver Concerns
Katie Thurston has experienced a pause in her breast cancer treatment following the discovery of spots on her liver.
Thurston, 34, shared this update on her Instagram Stories on Monday, March 24, stating that a liver biopsy is scheduled for this week to investigate further.
The former Bachelorette lead disclosed that her physician “seemed to be leaning more on the cancer in the liver vs optimistic it was nothing. This would place me at stage 4 diagnosis.” She also sought insights from others with advanced cancer, adding she’d “love to hear from my sisters who are stage 4 in terms of quality of life, motherhood, etc.”
In a further update through her Instagram broadcast channel, “Boobie Broadcast,” Thurston informed her followers that doctors detected “two liver lesions” potentially indicative of “metastatic disease.” She clarified that “the next step is a biopsy of the liver spots to confirm definitively.”
Initial Diagnosis and Treatment
Thurston publicly announced her stage 3 breast cancer diagnosis via social media in mid-February. “This is day one of sharing and is going to be a long one,” she wrote in her detailed Instagram post at the time. “This initial step of accepting my reality was the most challenging. But I am prepared to fight this.”
Treatment Update and Emotional Response
In Monday’s “Boobie Broadcast” update, she mentioned receiving a Zoladex injection that day. This hormone treatment assists in shrinking tumors by reducing estrogen production. “Asked for ice beforehand, which was helpful,” Thurston noted, also mentioning her decision to avoid looking at the needle due to its size.
She expressed considerable emotion during the procedure, part of the I-SPY clinical trial she is participating in.
“Do I cry excessively?” she questioned. “Hyperventilating too much? Not courageous enough? I intend to remain in this trial as long as they permit.”
Recent Marriage Before Health Update
Just two days prior, Thurston married Jeff Arcuri in a private ceremony at home. She and Arcuri, 36, spent Sunday, March 23, in a hospital setting. “Jeff and I are celebrating our honeymoon with some drinks,” Thurston posted on her Instagram Story, panning the camera to her partner and their mocktails. “Cheers, baby,” she playfully said as they toasted. “To husband and wife!”
Partner’s Perspective
In a recent exclusive interview with Us Weekly earlier in March, comedian Arcuri discussed how Thurston’s cancer diagnosis impacted their wedding plans.
“One might anticipate it creating more difficulties or friction, but it has solidified our bond more than anything, which is why we are advancing the wedding plans,” Arcuri told Us on March 20.
Thurston described their intimate wedding to Us as “so sweet,” adding, “We were, of course, hoping to plan a wedding, but there are many emotions involved with chemotherapy and the impact on health, and we are uncertain about the coming year. One evening, Jeff said, ‘I want to show you I still love you and I’m committed to this. I’ll marry you tomorrow.’ We flew in our parents from Michigan and Washington State, obtained our marriage license, and a friend is going to officiate.”
