Mets Finalize Starting Rotation: Megill and Canning Secure Spots
PORT ST. LUCIE — Tylor Megill arrived at spring training with a clear objective and has successfully earned a position in the Mets’ starting rotation.
Impressed by the right-hander’s improved command and efficiency during Grapefruit League games, manager Carlos Mendoza officially declared Megill as part of the rotation on Sunday. His first start of the season is slated for Game 2 in Houston.
Griffin Canning was also named to the rotation, securing the start for Game 3 in Houston.
Clay Holmes will commence the season as the Opening Day starter on Thursday. Following him, David Peterson and Kodai Senga are scheduled to pitch next week in Miami.
Paul Blackburn will commence the season in the bullpen, confirming earlier reports.
Mendoza Praises Megill’s Earned Opportunity
“It was not a straightforward decision, given how effectively everyone is pitching,” Mendoza stated before the Mets’ 10-2 exhibition victory over the Marlins at Clover Park. “Megill warranted it. He entered camp with a mission and achieved it through his performance. He executed several key aspects we emphasized, notably throwing strikes and attacking hitters throughout spring training. His repertoire is exceptional. He earned this opportunity.”
Canning, who signed a one-year, $4.25 million contract, was anticipated to be in the rotation from the beginning of spring camp.
In his final spring tune-up on Sunday, he limited the Marlins to two earned runs over 4 ⅓ innings.
He concluded spring training with a 1.88 ERA.
Megill Seizes Rotation Spot Amidst Pitching Injuries
Megill, who could have been optioned to Triple-A Syracuse—being the only pitcher among those vying for a spot with minor league options—emerged as a strong candidate to open the season with the Mets due to injuries to Frankie Montas and Sean Manaea.
Montas is dealing with a significant lat strain that could sideline him for a substantial portion of the season, while Manaea is recovering from a strained oblique and is expected to be out until late April.
Megill experienced inconsistency early last season with the Mets and spent a considerable part of the summer in Syracuse.
However, he returned to the major league roster in late August, posting a 2.32 ERA in his final six starts.
Megill Credits Strike Zone Focus for Improvement
“Focusing on attacking the strike zone and minimizing walks was key,” Megill stated regarding his late-season improvement. “Earlier in the season, excessive walks led to elevated pitch counts. By limiting walks and avoiding three-ball counts, I can maintain a manageable pitch count and ensure my health throughout each inning.”
Blackburn to Serve in Multi-Inning Relief Role
Blackburn will be deployed in a multi-inning relief capacity to maintain his pitch count, according to Mendoza.
The right-hander could transition into a starting role possibly by mid-April, when the Mets are anticipated to implement a six-man rotation.
Blackburn underwent offseason surgery to address a cerebrospinal fluid leak.
“Considering the uncertainties surrounding my condition at the end of last season, I believe I’ve made significant progress,” Blackburn commented. “I’m currently where I typically am toward the end of spring training—feeling in good condition and prepared to start the year and contribute.”
Manager Confident in Rotation’s Potential
When asked to describe his starting rotation, Mendoza expressed optimism.
“I feel very positive about it,” he said. “We are discussing pitchers with quality stuff and diverse pitch arsenals, including Peterson. There’s much to be encouraged about. We have a high level of confidence.”
