Tim Walz says he was joking when he mocked Tesla’s falling stock: ‘These people have no sense of humor’

Minnesota Governor Walz Clarifies Comments on Elon Musk and Tesla

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, a Democrat, has walked back remarks made last week that mocked Tesla and its CEO, Elon Musk, amidst the company’s recent stock market decline. The governor addressed the controversy during a town hall meeting in Rochester, Minnesota, on Saturday.

Walz Claims “Joke” Was Misunderstood

“This individual frustrates me, perhaps excessively,” Walz stated, referring to Musk. “I must be cautious about being sarcastic. I was attempting humor. Some individuals lack a sense of irony; they are exceedingly literal.”

He continued, “My intent was to highlight the collective outrage, and I made an imprudent remark about a corporation.”

Recall of Initial Remarks

Earlier in the week, while at an event in Wisconsin, Governor Walz made light of Tesla’s stock performance.

“As some of you may be aware, smartphones feature a stock application. I added Tesla to my watchlist for a midday lift—$225 and decreasing,” Walz recounted. “And to Tesla owners, no judgment. You can always remove the Tesla emblem with dental floss.”

Tesla’s Stock Performance and Vandalism Incidents

As of March, Tesla’s stock has depreciated by 41.4% year-to-date.

Recently, Tesla vehicles have been targeted in vandalism incidents, reportedly linked to protests against Musk’s involvement with former President Donald Trump’s administration.

Criticism Extends to Federal Workforce Initiative

Governor Walz further criticized Musk on Saturday concerning his involvement in the “Department of Government Efficiency,” or DOGE, an initiative where the tech billionaire aims to reduce the federal workforce as a cost-saving measure.

Walz Contrasts Musk’s Approach with Philanthropic Ideals

“They express indignation over the Tesla matter but disregard the disrespect shown to Minneapolis VA employees who care for veterans and face termination. They are indifferent,” the governor asserted.

“Perhaps it’s just my perspective. If I possessed immense wealth, I would be inclined to distribute funds among the populace,” he added. “It would be exceptionally gratifying to assist others. To actively help people. Unlike this individual.”
