Starmer Acknowledges “Respect” for Trump, Understands Stance on Europe
Keir Starmer has expressed his “like and respect” for US President Donald Trump, stating he comprehends the rationale behind Trump’s policies.
Prime Minister’s Remarks to New York Times
In an interview with the New York Times, the Prime Minister commented on the US President, noting, “President Trump raises a valid point when he advocates for a greater contribution from European nations towards the collective defence of Europe.”
He emphasized the critical juncture for the United Kingdom, cautioning against aligning exclusively with either Europe or the United States. “Churchill avoided it. Attlee avoided it. It would be a significant error, in my assessment, to make such a choice now,” he stated.
Trump Envoy Dismisses Starmer’s Ukraine Plan
However, Donald Trump’s special envoy recently dismissed Starmer’s proposal for a “coalition of the willing” to facilitate a ceasefire in Ukraine as merely a “posture and a pose.” The envoy also rejected any comparison between Starmer and Winston Churchill.
Steve Witkoff characterized the ceasefire idea as rooted in a “simplistic” view, suggesting UK and European leaders believe they must emulate Winston Churchill. Witkoff also voiced approval of Vladimir Putin, stating he “liked” the Russian president and did not perceive “Putin as a negative figure.”

Number 10 Downing Street declined to comment on Witkoff’s statements.
Chancellor Reeves Responds to Envoy’s Comments
Nevertheless, Chancellor Rachel Reeves, speaking on the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, indicated she was “not deterred” by the envoy’s remarks.
“We must ensure that any ceasefire is enforceable. This is what our Prime Minister, alongside global allies, is striving to achieve, and the US অবশ্যই plays an integral role,” Reeves asserted. “It is imperative that European countries, including the UK, increase defence spending. In today’s uncertain global landscape, our national and domestic security is paramount for numerous factors, including a robust economy.”
Starmer’s Interview in US Media
Starmer’s interview with the New York Times received prominent placement on the publication’s US website.
During the interview, the Prime Minister described the current crucial phase for Europe and Ukraine as long anticipated. “Deep down, we have understood this moment was approaching since Russian tanks crossed the border just over three years ago,” he explained. “We must treat this as a catalyst and seize the initiative.”
Personal Relationship with President Trump
The Prime Minister conveyed to the newspaper his personal dynamic with Trump: “On a personal level, I believe we maintain a positive rapport.” He further commented, “I like and respect him. I grasp his objectives.”
Addressing Trump’s Policies and Actions
Regarding some of President Trump’s policies, such as the 25% tariff on British steel and his criticism of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Starmer acknowledged that the President had created “a considerable degree of disorientation.” However, he argued that the appropriate reaction was not to be easily provoked.
He also downplayed the need for exaggerated rhetoric surrounding incidents, such as the reported tensions between Trump, Vice-President JD Vance, and Zelenskyy at the White House.
“On the occasion of the Oval Office meeting between President Trump and President Zelenskyy, which was reported to be strained, there was pressure for us to issue strongly critical statements, employing emotive language,” Starmer recounted. “My view was that a more effective approach was to engage directly with both parties, aiming to facilitate a common understanding.”
