Elton John: A Storied Career, New Music, and the Songs That Shaped Him

Sir Elton John, a figure of paramount influence in music, has indelibly shaped the landscape of composition. His era-defining melodies masterfully blended pop, rock, and ballad genres with innovative sounds, crafting soundtracks that have resonated deeply and become beloved anthems for generations.

Continuing a Legendary Journey

Spanning over five decades, his illustrious career demonstrates that Sir Elton John’s creative journey is far from over. His latest album, “Who Believes In Angels?”, a collaboration with acclaimed vocalist Brandi Carlile, is scheduled for release on April 4th.

Delving into Elton’s Musical Mind

In anticipation of this new album, we explore the artistic depths of Elton John’s creative process, seeking to understand his musical inspiration and, intriguingly, his personal listening preferences.

From Vast Vinyl Collection to Digital Age

Before the digital era revolutionized music consumption, Elton John amassed an extensive vinyl collection, reportedly encompassing approximately 25,000 LPs and 23,000 singles. This vast collection was sold in 1993, with the proceeds donated to the Terrence Higgins Trust, a charitable organization supporting individuals living with AIDS.

Signature Sound and Enduring Impact

The celebrated pianist has crafted some of the most emotionally resonant songs in popular music, revered for their beauty and depth. Possessing a distinctive style often imitated but never duplicated, Sir Elton John exhibits a vocal prowess and musical expertise that remains unparalleled.

The Rocket Man’s Trajectory

Affectionately known as ‘Rocket Man’ since his globally recognized 1972 hit, Elton John has gifted audiences with over 30 studio albums, building an enviable and extensive discography.

The Taupin Collaboration: A Historic Partnership

While renowned as a solo performer, his songwriting partnership with Bernie Taupin is a cornerstone of music history. Taupin’s lyrical artistry provides the narrative foundation for Elton’s compositions. Their collaboration, born from a 1967 meeting, has proven enduring and transformative for both artists.

Early Mastery and Breakthrough Success

Growing up in suburban London, Elton John demonstrated prodigious musical talent from a young age, mastering the piano early in life. By 1970, he achieved his first major hit single, “Your Song,” with the Elton John Band, marking the beginning of his ascent to global stardom.

Radio 2’s “Tracks Of My Years” Revelation

In 2019, the award-winning artist participated in BBC Radio 2’s “Tracks Of My Years” program, unveiling his top ten favorite songs of all time.

Eclectic Tastes: A Glimpse into Elton’s Preferences

Featuring a diverse and iconic selection, reflective of his own artistry, Elton’s list provides a rare glimpse into his musical inclinations. Unsurprisingly, his top choice is a certified classic – Elvis Presley’s “Heartbreak Hotel.” Discussing the 1956 track, Elton explained, “This record changed my life, and it changed the face of music. Before then, we had Guy Mitchell, Rosemary Clooney, Frank Sinatra, Kay Starr, and all those lovely American acts.”

He further elaborated, “My mum brought this record home, she bought one every week, and said, ‘I heard this in the record store, and I’ve never heard anything like it, so I had to buy it.’ She played it; it was a 7″, on HMV, and it transformed my life, igniting my passion for rock ‘n’ roll… it socially and musically changed the world.”

The Beatles’ “We Can Work It Out” is another timeless inclusion on his list. The singer recalled his initial encounter with the song: “I remember being at school, Pinner County Grammar School, when my friend Michael Johnson arrived with a 45″, proclaiming, ‘I’ve just heard this band; they’re going to be the biggest band in the world.’ It was ‘Love Me Do.’ I listened and thought, ‘It’s not bad,’ but I didn’t foresee their global dominance… he was right. He was reportedly number four in their fan club, recognizing their potential early on.”

Sir Elton added, “And, of course, what the 50s achieved with rock ‘n’ roll… The Beatles were extraordinary. They revolutionized recording techniques. Despite using relatively simple equipment, they experimented and composed phenomenal songs. ‘We Can Work It Out’ remains a truly exceptional song.”

Another standout selection on Sir Elton’s list is “The Weight” by The Band. Speaking about the track, he recounted: “John Peel played music from ‘Big Pink’ on his show, which I religiously listened to then. He showcased all the best new music, and Bernie and I were amazed when we heard it. We had never encountered anything like it. It was Americana, delivered in a soulful, funky, and relaxed style.”

Reflecting on the song’s transformative influence, Elton explained, “The next day, we visited Music Land in London and purchased the import. It, like Elvis Presley initially, changed my life again. This music influenced me deeply through its songwriting, lyrics, and musicianship, impacting albums like ‘Tumbleweed Connection’ and ‘Madman’.”

Further iconic tracks on Sir Elton John’s curated list encompass Jerry Lee Lewis’s “Great Balls of Fire” – popularized anew by “Top Gun” – alongside Peter Gabriel’s “Don’t Give Up” and Aretha Franklin’s “Think.”
