Balearic Islands panic as half of archipelago’s beaches ‘could disappear’ within years

Balearic Beaches Face Uncertain Future Amid Erosion Concerns

The future of tourism in the Balearic Islands is under scrutiny due to growing apprehension regarding the condition of its beaches. Recent research indicates that over half of the archipelago’s beach surfaces could vanish before the century concludes.

Climate Change and Human Impact Under Scrutiny

Researcher Gabriel Jordà, from the Spanish Institute of Oceanography and the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), has voiced alarm, attributing the situation to climate change and detrimental human practices. According to the expert, sea levels in the Balearics have ascended by nine centimetres since 1993.

Posidonia Oceanica: A Vital Marine Plant Under Threat

Posidonia oceanica, a marine plant unique to the Mediterranean Sea, is essential for coastal well-being. It safeguards coastlines and enhances both water purity and biodiversity.

Mr. Jordà cautions that heightened extreme storms, potentially exacerbated by climate change, could decimate Posidonia meadows. This destruction would further endanger coastlines and amplify sea level surges in the Balearics by up to 80 centimetres.

This alteration could double the intensity of coastal storms, placing numerous island beaches in a precarious situation. Furthermore, sea temperatures have risen by up to 1.6 degrees Celsius in the past four decades.

Human actions, encompassing pollution, anchoring, and declining water quality, also contribute to the vulnerability of Posidonia.

Beaches at Risk: Potential Disappearance of Coastal Areas

Scientists caution that the survival of Balearic beaches is precarious unless action is taken. Without intervention, more than 50% of Balearic beach surfaces are at risk of disappearing by the end of the century, potentially reaching 80% during storm events.

The continued loss of Posidonia could accelerate this timeline, impacting tourism and the Balearics’ renowned beach appeal within decades.

Projected Sea Level Rise and Beach Reduction

Projections estimate a further 10 to 15 cm increase in Mediterranean sea levels within 15 years, by 2040. This rise could diminish many Balearic beaches by five to ten metres.

Call for Conservation: Protecting Existing Posidonia Meadows

Mr. Jordà advocates for conserving existing Posidonia meadows as a primary solution, rather than focusing on extensive replanting efforts.

The specialist warns that time is critical and prompt intervention is imperative. He urges decision-makers to implement policies that lessen the impact of climate change on the islands.

Global Implications: Sea Level Rise Threatens Island Nations

Rising sea levels are a significant concern for numerous island nations globally. For example, Kiribati, an island nation in Micronesia in the central Pacific Ocean, is projected to become uninhabitable by 2050 and potentially vanish entirely in the coming decades.
