Cycling provides numerous health benefits, improving cardiovascular fitness and mental well-being. However, challenging terrains or extended distances can deter some riders. Electric bikes offer a solution.

The Ampler Stout is a pedal-assist e-bike, meaning it augments your pedaling power rather than replacing it entirely. This assistance reduces exertion, potentially encouraging more frequent cycling, particularly when facing inclines. Research suggests e-bike users may even engage in more physical activity than conventional bike riders.

Many e-bikes are readily identifiable due to bulky batteries mounted visibly. Ampler, however, prioritizes a design that mimics traditional bicycles. The Stout conceals its electric components, appearing as a standard city bike to the untrained eye.

vCard QR Code

vCard.red is a free platform for creating a mobile-friendly digital business cards. You can easily create a vCard and generate a QR code for it, allowing others to scan and save your contact details instantly.

The platform allows you to display contact information, social media links, services, and products all in one shareable link. Optional features include appointment scheduling, WhatsApp-based storefronts, media galleries, and custom design options.

Ampler, which assembles its e-bikes by hand in Tallinn, Estonia, strategically integrates the battery within the frame’s downtube. This design choice allows the Ampler Stout to maintain the appearance of a classic urban bicycle.

The Stout is currently in its second generation. Having tested both iterations (first-generation models are still available at reduced prices), I observed a comfortable, upright riding posture and smooth gear transitions across its nine speeds. Ampler’s product line also includes single-speed models, but for everyday practicality, the Stout presents itself as a versatile and adaptable option.

The bike’s comfortable, upright riding position is suitable for urban commutes and leisurely weekend rides alike.

A notable enhancement in the second-generation model is the incorporated black and white display, subtly positioned within the frame’s top tube.

Activating the power button, now conveniently located beneath the top tube, illuminates the display to show battery level and assistance mode. Riders can select from Level 2, Level 1, or no assistance, though the engaging nature of the power assist might make disabling it infrequent.

The display also provides trip statistics and, importantly, remaining battery capacity. The power button doubles as a control for the integrated lights.

GPS integration is another upgrade absent in prior models. The Stout can now pinpoint its location for parking purposes. Utilizing the Ampler application, riders can remotely lock and unlock the bike, an advantageous security feature, particularly for city dwellers.

The 250-watt rear hub motor delivers assistance up to 15.5 mph. Beyond this speed, the rider relies solely on their own power. Operationally, the system provides a remarkably smooth experience, offering gentle propulsion from a standstill and sufficient boost without abrupt surges.

Its advantage is most apparent on steep inclines, enabling riders to ascend with ease, overtaking unassisted cyclists. The electric assistance remains discreet and unobtrusive.

Range tests indicated approximately 45 miles, extending to 50 miles or more on flatter routes.

During evaluations, the range approached 45 miles, potentially reaching 50 miles or more on level terrain. A full recharge takes roughly 2 hours and 30 minutes, providing convenient turnaround time.

While e-bikes can be heavy, the Stout weighs 17.8kg, manageable for short carries, though less ideal for multi-story dwellings without elevator access. In the e-bike category, however, it remains relatively lightweight.

The Stout is available in two frame dimensions: 58cm for riders between 5ft 5in and 6ft 6in, and 55cm for those between 5ft 4in and 6ft tall. Color options include Meteor Ash, a deep grey, and Pearl Black, a subtly lustrous dark tone. Both finishes present an understated and elegant aesthetic.

The Ampler Stellar shares similarities with the Stout but features a step-through frame for easier mounting and dismounting.

The Ampler Stout Gen 2 is priced at £3,190 and available at amplerbikes.com. The original Stout G1 Anniversary edition is offered at £2,290.

Both models deliver a positive experience, but the second-generation Stout excels, providing a remarkably enjoyable ride with refined electric assistance.

The Ampler Stout Gen 2 delivers a remarkably enjoyable ride, enhanced by discreet yet potent electric assistance.

For those looking to cycle more frequently, consider essential accessories. In regions with unpredictable weather, waterproof outerwear like Transit Trousers from Showers Pass (£92, currently on offer) provides crucial protection.

Maintaining optimal tire pressure reduces puncture risk. A stand pump, such as the Topeak Joe Blow Sport EX (£29 on special offer from Tredz), is recommended. Finally, particularly in urban settings, a robust lock is indispensable. Kryptonite’s New York range offers reliable security, with the Standard Lock (£82.99 from Halfords) representing a worthwhile investment for theft prevention.
