Amanda Seyfried Reflects on “Jennifer’s Body” Box Office Disappointment and Marketing Blame
Amanda Seyfried has voiced her perspective on the initial reception of “Jennifer’s Body,” attributing its underwhelming box office performance in 2009 to ineffective marketing.
In a recent interview with GQ, the actress, aged 39, pinpointed the marketing strategy as the primary reason for the film’s initial struggles. “If critics had issues,” Seyfried stated, “it was with the marketing. It was simply poor,” adding, “We all concur on that.”
Seyfried, who starred alongside Megan Fox in the horror-comedy, elaborated that the promotional approach “cheapened” the movie, presenting it merely as a “gory romp.”
“I believe they undermined its potential,” she asserted, praising director Karyn Kusama and screenwriter Diablo Cody as a “formidable team.”
“I cherish the character Needy. It marked the first instance I portrayed someone genuinely nerdy, complete with glasses,” Seyfried continued. “Megan embodied a demon, which was fantastic. We all enjoyed the experience immensely, and I’d love to commemorate that with a sequel.”

Seyfried expressed her high regard for the film, stating she “cannot critique” it because, in her view, “it’s flawless.”
“It possesses audacity. Diablo Cody was articulate, intelligent, beautiful, and humorous,” she remarked. “We were conveying a specific form of youthful anxiety in a comedic manner within a distinct genre. The special effects were remarkable, the stunts were impressive—it encompassed everything one could desire.”
“Jennifer’s Body” centers on Jennifer Check (Fox), a high school student possessed by a demon who preys on her male classmates for sustenance. Seyfried portrays Needy Lesnicki, Jennifer’s intellectually inclined best friend.
Despite its initial theatrical underperformance, “Jennifer’s Body” has since cultivated a dedicated cult following.
Earlier this month, Seyfried shared with The Hollywood Reporter her opinion that “Jennifer’s Body” has “aged gracefully.”
“I anticipated ‘Jennifer’s Body’ to be a significant success. Diablo Cody, Karyn Kusama, Megan Fox… we had all the necessary elements, yet it didn’t materialize as expected,” she reflected.
“I believe there’s potential for another installment,” Seyfried hinted regarding a possible sequel. “We are all receptive to the idea.”
Possible “Jennifer’s Body” Sequel: Cast and Creator Interest
Fox herself previously discussed the prospect of “Jennifer’s Body 2” in a 2021 interview with The Washington Post.
“I don’t think a sequel would be challenging to produce,” she commented. “In fact, transforming it into a TV series would be a compelling direction.”
Cody, aged 46, also alluded to a potential sequel in a conversation with Nylon last year.
“That has always been my aspiration, though I didn’t consider it realistically achievable,” the screenwriter disclosed. “Sequels for films that underperformed are rarely greenlit. However, now it seems like a plausible possibility.”
Diablo Cody “Ready to Go” for Sequel
“I’m ready to proceed,” Cody affirmed. “I simply need to assemble the appropriate team who shares my vision.”
