Alan Titchmarsh fights back tears live on air as he shares ‘worries’ for his children

Alan Titchmarsh Becomes Emotional Sharing Concerns for Daughters

Alan Titchmarsh was visibly moved as he expressed worries regarding his two daughters during a conversation about family life. On Sunday’s episode of his ITV morning programme, ‘Love Your Weekend’, the celebrated gardener engaged in lighthearted banter with guests Jenny Agutter and Tenee Bailey, as they discussed film and television.

Nostalgia for ‘The Railway Children’ Evokes Tears

This playful exchange transitioned into a heartfelt discussion about Jenny Agutter’s renowned role as Bobbie in the classic 1970s children’s film, ‘The Railway Children’. The beloved film clearly holds a special significance for Titchmarsh, particularly one profoundly touching scene. Upon viewing the poignant moment of Bobbie’s reunion with her father, Titchmarsh became overcome with emotion.

Sentimental Value and Family Connection

Titchmarsh disclosed the film’s deep impact on him, revealing that his wife Alison, along with his daughters Polly and Camilla, had gifted him a garden bench. This bench was engraved with Jenny Agutter’s affecting dialogue from the film: “Daddy, my daddy”.

In conversation with The Times, Titchmarsh admitted the film’s sentimentality deeply affects him, leading him to often excuse himself when his daughters watch it. In a touching revelation, the devoted father shared that despite his daughters now being in their forties, their names remain on their childhood bedroom doors at their family home.

Fatherly Worries and Social Media Concerns

Writing in his column, he reflected on parenthood: “Fathers of sons have expectations. Fathers of daughters have worries. You worry about them constantly. I mean, not in a paranoid way, because I delighted in their company and they’re now mums themselves and I’ve got four grandchildren.”

Concerns about Social Media Impact

He confessed, “I do worry about social media and its impact, though. It can foster introspection and become somewhat of an obsession. I contribute to it but hopefully in a more positive and healthy way.”

Later Life Challenges and Pet Ownership

This follows Titchmarsh’s candid discussion in Best magazine regarding the challenges he encounters in later life, particularly concerning pet ownership.

He elaborated that ageing and a more variable work schedule result in increased time away from home, complicating dog ownership. Nevertheless, Titchmarsh continues to find pleasure in caring for his grandchildren’s pets.
