Historic Vehicle Owners Benefit from Zero Vehicle Tax (VED)

Owners of historic vehicles are set to benefit from a zero Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) bill when they tax their automobiles. This applies to models initially registered prior to April 1985.

Understanding Historic Vehicle VED Exemption

According to Heritage, specialists in classic car insurance, vehicles categorized as “historic” by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) are cars, vans, and motorcycles aged 40 years or older.

“Once a vehicle obtains official historic status, it becomes exempt from paying vehicle tax (VED),” Heritage stated. “This exemption takes effect from the commencement of the financial year following the vehicle’s 40th year of manufacture.”

Eligibility Timeline:

  • Vehicles manufactured before January 1, 1983: Eligible from April 1, 2023
  • Vehicles manufactured before January 1, 1984: Eligible from April 1, 2024
  • Vehicles manufactured before January 1, 1985: Eligible from April 1, 2025

Mandatory Vehicle Taxing Despite Exemption

Even though historic vehicle owners are not required to pay VED, it is still mandatory to tax their vehicles with the DVLA. Failing to do so, even inadvertently, can result in penalties for motorists.

GOV.UK advises, “The DVLA will dispatch a vehicle tax reminder notice prior to your tax expiration date. While payment will not be necessary, you are still required to tax your vehicle.”
