The beautiful city in Spain home to world’s ‘oldest’ restaurant

Madrid’s El Botín Celebrates 300 Years as World’s Oldest Restaurant

A Culinary Landmark in the Spanish Capital

This summer, numerous British tourists are anticipated to visit Spain, seeking its agreeable climate, culturally rich cities, and picturesque coastlines. Madrid, a particularly favored city, attracts millions of visitors annually.

While the Spanish capital boasts renowned landmarks such as Plaza Mayor and Museo del Prado, Restaurant El Botín stands out as an unmissable culinary destination, especially as it commemorates its 300th anniversary. Established in 1725, this illustrious eatery has earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s oldest restaurant. Initially owned by descendants of Cándido Remis, ownership transitioned in 1930 to the family of the current proprietor, José González.

Centuries of History and Culinary Tradition

Today, El Botín employs 95 personnel and serves approximately 500 diners daily. Notably, the culinary team continues to utilize the original wood-fired oven from the 18th century for all its dishes.

Although the restaurant marks its tricentennial this year, its wine cellar predates it by over a century. According to José González, the cellar’s origins trace back to 1590 when it was part of a former inn.

El Botín’s designation as the world’s oldest restaurant was officially recognized in 1986. This recognition came about after an English patron suggested they apply to the Guinness Book of World Records, leading El Botín to claim the title from the previously recognized French restaurant Café Procope.

Generational Ownership and Enduring Legacy

Throughout its 300-year history, El Botín has been under the stewardship of only two families. Following the initial Remis family ownership, the González family assumed control, with José’s son Antonio and nephew Eduardo poised to continue the family legacy in the future.

A Venue Favored by Celebrities and Royalty

Over the years, El Botín has drawn a diverse array of celebrated figures and royal patrons. Its esteemed clientele includes literary icon Ernest Hemingway, actors Charlton Heston and Ava Gardner, as well as Queen Sofía of Spain, former US First Lady Nancy Reagan, and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

Signature Spanish Dishes and Culinary Delights

British visitors to El Botín this year will have the opportunity to savor some of the restaurant’s celebrated dishes. It is particularly renowned for its Botín sirloin steak with mushrooms and Botín clams.

Other house specialties include slow-roasted suckling pig and Castilian-style roast lamb, representing quintessential Spanish cuisine.
