Stephen Fry Recalls Mortifying Paul McCartney Singing Incident
Broadcaster Stephen Fry was left thoroughly embarrassed after Sir Paul McCartney humorously told him to “be quiet” during a karaoke mishap. The celebrated presenter, recognized for his extensive knowledge and esteemed acting career, boasts notable credits in productions such as Harry Potter, V for Vendetta, and The Hobbit.
Despite his acclaimed acting and presenting abilities, Fry admits to a deficiency in musical talent, a fact he has largely avoided spotlighting throughout his career. On Saturday’s edition of The Jonathan Ross Show, the host welcomed Fry alongside actress Aimee Lou Wood, comedian Joanne McNally, singer Yungblud, and chef Big Zuu.
Karaoke Revelation on The Jonathan Ross Show
As the program neared its conclusion, the guests participated in a karaoke segment, showcasing their varying vocal abilities. Fry initially hesitated to engage, citing his lack of singing prowess.
He then recounted an embarrassing experience involving the Beatles legend at a funeral. “I can demonstrate my inability to sing without actually singing,” Fry explained to viewers. “It’s a lifelong reality β I simply cannot sing.”
“Years ago, at the funeral of John Schlesinger, the distinguished director, I was, as usual, miming during the hymns.
Coincidentally, I was standing next to Paul McCartney, who noticed my charade. He remarked, ‘Stephen, you aren’t singing. Why aren’t you participating?'”
“You’re Right, You Can’t Sing. Shut Up.”
Despite his initial reluctance, Fry decided to join in during the subsequent song, which quickly led to an awkward outcome. He continued, “I confessed to Paul, ‘I cannot sing, I always mime.’ But he insisted, ‘Everyone can sing, just sing!'”
“So, I thought, fine, I’ll try. As the next song commenced and I began to sing, he turned to me and said, ‘You’re right, you can’t sing. Be quiet’.” The studio audience erupted in laughter as the flustered presenter recoiled in embarrassment.
Viewer Reactions to On-Screen Singing
Prior to the show’s conclusion, the guests collectively performed BeyoncΓ©’s popular song “Halo,” offering viewers a direct sample of the broadcaster’s subpar vocal skills. One viewer expressed their opinion on X (formerly Twitter), stating:
“I don’t wish to be impolite, but could they please be quiet?!… #jonathanross #theJRshow.”
