Djokovic Credits Murray Talks for Miami Open Turnaround
Novak Djokovic disclosed that extensive discussions with Andy Murray preceded his resurgence at the Miami Open, where he ended a period of losses. The world No. 5 secured his first victory in two months, overcoming Rinky Hijikata 6-0, 7-6(1) on Friday. Following a disappointing early exit at Indian Wells earlier in March, Djokovic dedicated nearly two weeks to intensive preparation with Murray and his team, which he believes contributed to his improved performance at the Miami Open, marking his first appearance at the event in six years.
Doubts Dispelled in Miami
Prior to the Miami Open—his first since 2019—questions lingered about Djokovic’s form. The fourth-seeded player had not tasted victory since defeating Carlos Alcaraz in Australia two months prior. However, he delivered a display of “almost faultless tennis” to seize the initial seven games against Hijikata, before the Australian player elevated his game in the subsequent set. This showing contrasted sharply with his Indian Wells performance, where he suffered a first-round defeat to Botic van de Zandschulp.
Heart-to-Heart with Murray Key to Revival
After a fortnight away from competitive play, Djokovic revealed the significant impact of his candid conversations with Murray, which facilitated his recovery from self-doubt.
“I spent considerable time with my team, training and thoroughly analyzing the game, addressing both tennis-specific elements and mental and emotional aspects,” the 24-time Grand Slam champion stated to Sky Sports.
Strategic Adjustments and Mental Fortitude
Djokovic elaborated on the focus of these discussions:

“Following Australia, and particularly after a subpar showing at Indian Wells and a defeat to Berrettini in Doha, I experienced increased self-doubt. The two-week break provided ample opportunity to refine my game,” Djokovic admitted.
Shared Belief with Murray
Djokovic further emphasized the importance of his dialogue with Murray, his coach and former rival, which instilled the necessary conviction for a strong Miami Open debut.
“Andy and I discussed the game and concurred that maintaining diligent practice and performing at a high level would ultimately yield positive results on court,” Djokovic explained.
“I hold firm belief in this process and am encouraged by my start at the Miami Open. I am hopeful to sustain this momentum.”
Looking Ahead in Miami
Djokovic is now set to compete against lucky loser Camilo Ugo Carabelli in the third round, aiming to build upon his improved form in Miami.
“It’s been six years since I last played here,” he noted. “Miami is a fantastic location with wonderful memories, primarily from Key Biscayne. I am eager to continue competing.”
