New York Sirens’ Abby Roque pulls off fabled Michigan goal in PWHL first

Ottawa Charge Defeats New York Sirens in PWHL Action

Tereza Vanišová propelled the Ottawa Charge to a 5-2 victory over the New York Sirens on Saturday, netting three goals in a dominant 10-minute stretch across the second and third periods.

Vanišová’s Hat Trick Outshines Historic Goal

Vanišová’s offensive burst overshadowed a milestone achievement by New York’s Abby Roque, who recorded the first “Michigan” goal in Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) history. Roque executed the skillful play behind the net, tucking a high, wraparound shot just inside the post past Ottawa goaltender Gwyneth Philips. The maneuver, known as a “Michigan,” was flawlessly executed by Roque, a native of Sault Ste Marie, Michigan.

Roque’s goal, scored two minutes into the third period, narrowed the Sirens’ deficit to 3-2. Vanišová had previously extended Ottawa’s lead to 3-1 with two goals in the final five minutes of the second period. Shortly after Roque’s marker, Vanišová completed her hat trick, restoring a 4-2 advantage for Ottawa.

Clark Secures Ottawa Victory

Emily Clark further solidified Ottawa’s win, scoring the team’s fifth goal midway through the final period.

Goaltender Performances

Philips made an impressive 34 saves for Ottawa, currently fifth in the PWHL standings with a 9-1-4-10 record. Corinne Schroeder stopped 26 shots for New York, who sit in sixth place with a 5-4-4-12 record.

Playoff Hopes Remain for Ottawa

This victory bolsters Ottawa’s playoff aspirations as they remain just two points behind Minnesota for the fourth and final playoff spot in the PWHL.
