Kirsty Coventry’s in-tray: six big issues facing IOC’s new president

Seven-time Olympic swimming medalist, Kirsty Coventry, is no stranger to overcoming adversity. However, the incoming International Olympic Committee (IOC) president is now poised to confront the most significant array of challenges facing global sports since the boycotts that impacted the Moscow and Los Angeles Games in the 1980s. As the 41-year-old prepares to succeed Thomas Bach in June, what critical issues await her leadership?

Protecting Women’s Sports

A central commitment for Coventry has been the safeguarding of women’s sports and athletes. She recently highlighted her actions as Zimbabwe’s sports minister, where she dismissed the national football federation board following reports of sexual harassment against female referees. She has also voiced support for a comprehensive ban on transgender athletes competing in women’s categories.

“Preserving the female category in sports is paramount,” Coventry stated. “Growing scientific research increasingly demonstrates that transgender women possess a physical advantage in female categories, potentially diminishing equitable opportunities for women.”

Coventry intends to establish a task force dedicated to determining the optimal strategies for protecting women’s sports. This issue gained global attention during the women’s boxing tournament in Paris, particularly after Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-ting secured gold medals.

In January, Coventry acknowledged the necessity of learning from past events, while also emphasizing the need for “increased sensitivity” concerning athletes with differences in sex development (DSD), who were assigned female at birth but subsequently underwent male puberty.

Russia’s Olympic Status

Currently, there is no clear path for the IOC to reinstate the Russian Olympic Committee’s suspension, given that regions in eastern Ukraine remain under Russian control. However, Coventry has expressed opposition to blanket bans on nations from Olympic participation and pledged to form another task force to develop “guiding frameworks” regarding Russia’s involvement.

As it stands, only a limited number of Russian athletes will compete as neutral participants at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics within the next year. It remains to be seen whether the potential return of Russian athletes – considering ice hockey is reportedly President Putin’s preferred sport – could become a factor in peace negotiations concerning Ukraine.

Navigating Relations with Donald Trump

Coventry assumes leadership amid escalating global geopolitical uncertainty, particularly with Donald Trump’s threats to restrict entry to the United States for individuals from specific countries. Casey Wasserman, chair of the 2028 Los Angeles Games, has asserted: “Regardless of current politics, America will welcome all 209 nations for the Olympics.” Yet, there remains considerable ambiguity regarding future policy under a potential Trump administration.

Coventry has conveyed a resolute stance, stating: “I have experience dealing with, shall we say, challenging men in positions of power since the age of 20,” in response to a question about Trump. “We will not compromise our core values: solidarity and ensuring every athlete who qualifies for the Olympic Games has the opportunity to participate and to be secure throughout the event.”

Future Olympic Host City: 2036 Games

A critical priority for the IOC is selecting a host for the 2036 Olympics, with strong bids anticipated from India, Qatar, Turkey, and other nations. A key indicator will be whether Coventry maintains Bach’s approach of allowing a “preferred bid” to be expedited through exclusive negotiations.

Should this strategy continue, India is likely to be considered a frontrunner. Coventry reportedly maintains a close relationship with influential IOC member Nita Ambani, whose family is among the wealthiest in Asia. While no definitive timeline exists for the 2036 decision, Coventry has suggested a more inclusive process, involving wider IOC member participation in the decision-making.

Addressing the Climate Crisis

The escalating climate crisis poses a dual threat, both to the traditional July-August timing of the Summer Games and to the long-term viability of the Winter Olympics. Coventry has advocated for greater adaptability, referencing the relocation of the Tokyo 2020 marathon to Sapporo for cooler conditions. It is plausible that future Games, such as a potential India Games in 2036 and perhaps Saudi Arabia in 2040, could be scheduled during autumn months.

“We are witnessing remarkable interest in hosting the Games for 2036 and 2040 from emerging regions, which is encouraging,” she noted. “This necessitates re-evaluating the timing conventions for both the Summer and Winter Games, requiring a proactive stance.”

Maintaining Olympic Relevance

The Olympics have demonstrated considerable resilience amidst a rapidly evolving media and entertainment landscape, with the Paris Games achieving notable success. Recently, NBC announced a four-year rights extension for the Olympic Games, valued at $3 billion (£2.5 billion), securing coverage through to 2036. However, a crucial undertaking for Coventry over the coming years will be attracting new, high-level sponsors, potentially from India and Saudi Arabia, and ensuring the Games remain globally relevant, particularly engaging younger demographics.
