Jordan Henderson: ‘I looked at how far it was to Berlin and I hired a van’

Henderson’s England Return: Determination Pays Off

He desired to participate. Jordan Henderson believed he warranted inclusion. Consequently, despite challenges, he dedicated himself to achieving his objective. This persistence has marked the Ajax midfielder’s career, evident once more with his return to the England national team. He earned his 81st cap as a substitute in Thomas Tuchel’s debut as head coach during the 2-0 World Cup qualifying victory against Albania on Friday evening.

Euro 2024 Disappointment

Last summer presented a contrasting perspective. Henderson experienced significant disappointment at being excluded by Gareth Southgate from the Euro 2024 squad in Germany, despite his involvement throughout the qualification process. A muscle injury sustained last March proved decisive, sidelining him for nearly two months and impeding his ability to regain full fitness by the season’s end. This was Southgate’s justification for the omission.

Driven to Witness the Final

When his national team reached the Euro 2024 final against Spain, Henderson felt compelled to be present. Fortunately, Ajax’s pre-season schedule accommodated his plans with a break in fixtures. However, flight availability posed an issue. Henderson consulted online maps and identified a feasible road route from Amsterdam to Berlin, approximately six hours and 40 minutes. He then rented a van, deciding to drive.

“I was uncertain until the last minute about my ability to attend due to training schedules,” Henderson stated. “But we had time off the next day, allowing me to go. Upon confirming my availability, I discovered a lack of flights from both England and Amsterdam. Consequently, I assessed the distance and hired a van for my family and me, and we drove.”

Fan Encounters on the Road

The reaction from England supporters during impromptu stops along the journey was noteworthy. “When we stopped for restrooms or fuel, encountering fans in service stations was amusing,” he recounted. “It was actually quite pleasant connecting with them, although I would have preferred to be with the team.”

“Watching the match on television was difficult, but my sole desire was for the team to succeed and win. I felt confident of victory and wanted to witness it firsthand. Regrettably, the outcome was unfavorable, but I remain glad that I watched them live.”

Tuchel’s Recall and Henderson’s Influence

Henderson is embarking on a new chapter, reinstated into the squad by Tuchel after being overlooked by interim manager Lee Carsley during the autumn period. The recall surprised many, with Tuchel admitting Henderson was not initially considered. This changed after assuming his role in January, where he consistently heard players and staff emphasize Henderson’s significant impact both on and off the field. Tuchel contacted Henderson in February and, within a brief 15-minute conversation, recognized the necessity of his inclusion.

Ajax Season and Transfer Speculation

The experienced player has performed effectively for Ajax this season, who lead the Eredivisie standings by six points over PSV Eindhoven with eight matches remaining. Their schedule includes an upcoming fixture against PSV. However, his tenure has encountered turbulence, notably in January.

Amidst Ajax’s financial constraints, the club considered transferring Henderson, a high-earning player, to Monaco. News of this potential move was perceived by some as Henderson seeking to abandon the club that had provided him refuge from his unsuccessful transfer from Liverpool to Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia in the previous January.

Captaincy Controversy

On January 30th, as Ajax prepared for their Europa League match against Galatasaray, advanced discussions with Monaco led Henderson to believe his transfer was imminent. He agreed to play against Galatasaray to support the team. However, he felt uncomfortable wearing the captain’s armband and delegated it to veteran goalkeeper Remko Pasveer, triggering public criticism. Henderson faced accusations of disrespecting the captaincy and questioning his professionalism.

This situation resulted in an extended public exchange between a frustrated Henderson and Dutch media following Ajax’s subsequent league game against Feyenoord. Broadcast live, Henderson directly refuted alleged misinformation, presenting his perspective. Ajax’s victory, secured by a late goal from Kenneth Taylor, helped alleviate tensions. Subsequently, the Ajax board decided against selling Henderson, resolving the situation.

Henderson’s Role at Ajax

Integrating a midfielder of Henderson’s profile into Ajax, a club renowned for its distinct footballing philosophy, presents unique challenges. Conversely, manager Francesco Farioli, appointed last summer after a disappointing season, prioritizes results. Henderson aligns with his approach and has garnered support from dedicated club supporters.

Focus on the World Cup Dream

Henderson prefers not to revisit the January events, including accusations of not celebrating team goals during the Galatasaray victory, which he denies. Instead, his focus remains on England and the aspiration of participating in the World Cup.

“I never believed my international career was concluded, otherwise I would have retired,” Henderson affirmed. “Naturally, I was disappointed about missing the Euros, but my physical condition remains strong, and I never intended to close the door on England. Deep down, I always aimed to return and thankfully, I received this opportunity.”

“Balance is crucial for any successful team. Historically successful teams demonstrate experience throughout the squad. Equally important is the integration of emerging young players; this blend is present within our current team.”
