World's oldest Michelin-starred restaurant loses a star

Georges Blanc Restaurant Loses Coveted Third Michelin Star

Unexpected Downgrade for Culinary Institution

Georges Blanc, recognized as the world’s longest-standing Michelin-starred restaurant, has reportedly surrendered its esteemed third star, according to sources in French media.

The 82-year-old celebrated French chef, Georges Blanc himself, conveyed to the AFP news agency that the revocation was “unexpected.”

Blanc stated they would “make do with the two stars,” suggesting a potential pivot towards a less exclusive and more approachable dining experience.

A Legacy of Michelin Stars

Situated in Vonnas, near the city of Lyon, the restaurant’s prestigious Michelin journey commenced in 1929 under Élisa Blanc, Georges’ grandmother. It has since consistently maintained at least one star from the esteemed restaurant guide.

Georges Blanc assumed leadership of the establishment in 1964, alongside his mother Paulette, before taking full command four years later at the age of 25.

He achieved the coveted third Michelin star for the restaurant in 1981, upholding the distinction until this recent development.

This signifies that the veteran chef, recipient of numerous national accolades including France’s Legion of Honour, has spent a greater portion of his life with three Michelin stars than without.

Michelin Guide’s Perspective

Gwendal Poullenec, director of the Michelin Guide, informed AFP that this decision aimed to “reflect the evolution of the restaurant’s quality within our rankings.”

However, Poullenec also lauded Mr. Blanc, acknowledging, “It was truly under his guidance that what began as a family inn experienced a renaissance, transforming into the gourmet village and significant gastronomic destination it is today.”

He affirmed that the guide will “continue to observe this restaurant with the same attentiveness and meticulousness” in the years ahead.

Expansion and Michelin’s History

Beyond his flagship venue, Mr. Blanc presides over a collection of restaurants, hotels, culinary shops, and an inn.

Michelin, primarily a French tire manufacturer, has been producing its restaurant guide since 1900. The star system was introduced in 1926.

Initially conceived to encourage automobile travel, the guide aimed to boost the demand for car tires.

Michelin is scheduled to host its annual star presentation ceremony later this month.
