Germany Pledges Further Multibillion-Euro Aid Package to Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to Germany on Friday for its newly announced multibillion-euro aid package, aimed at bolstering Kyiv’s defense capabilities against Russia.
“Exactly What Ukraine Needs”
In a social media message, Zelenskyy stated that Germany’s support is providing “exactly what Ukraine needs most” to protect civilians and preserve lives within the country.
He conveyed his appreciation to Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and also acknowledged Friedrich Merz, leader of the opposition Christian Democratic Union, indicating cross-party support for Ukraine. Zelenskyy concluded his message with “Thank you, Germany,” written in German.
Military Support Details
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha elaborated on the aid package via social media platform X, noting that “Additional military assistance will enhance our capacities in crucial areas,” listing air defense, artillery, unmanned aerial vehicles (drones), armored vehicles, mine clearance equipment, and other essential materiel.
Sybiha further emphasized the significance of Germany’s contribution, stating, “We are thankful to Germany for its strategic investment in equitable and enduring peace and security, both in Ukraine and across the European continent.”
Impact of German Aid
Zelenskyy highlighted the tangible impact of German weaponry, asserting that it has already been instrumental in saving thousands of Ukrainian lives. He added that this continued support “will save even more lives in the present and future years.”
Breakdown of the Aid Package
Earlier, the German Bundestag’s budget committee sanctioned the comprehensive aid package. It encompasses an additional €3 billion ($3.26 billion) allocated for the current year, with a commitment of up to €8.3 billion earmarked for the period spanning 2026 to 2029.
Weapons Deliveries
According to Germany’s Ministry of Defence, forthcoming weapons deliveries to Ukraine this year will include the Iris-T air defense system, guided missiles, surveillance radars, drones, combat vehicles, and small arms, as confirmed by a ministry spokesperson.
Total German Assistance
Government spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit announced that Germany’s total aid to Ukraine has surpassed €44 billion since the commencement of Russia’s full-scale invasion, underscoring Germany’s sustained commitment to supporting Ukraine.
