Unexpected Journey into Eora with Avowed
Embarking on a playthrough of Avowed was not initially planned for this period. However, during recovery, vivid dreams, including a surreal transformation of my neighborhood into a fantasy village reminiscent of the game’s aesthetic, sparked an unforeseen urge to delve into Obsidian’s latest RPG. This unexpected immersion prompted a re-evaluation of immediate gaming priorities, leading to the decision to experience Avowed firsthand.
A Standout Fantasy RPG of 2025
Avowed distinguishes itself as a remarkable fantasy role-playing experience of this year. Its expansive yet meticulously crafted world offers a substantial sense of adventure without overwhelming players with superfluous open-world tasks. The narrative is exceptionally well-written, characterized by a lyrical quality in its dialogue. Characters engage in thoughtful and relatable discussions concerning survival amidst political turmoil and widespread illness. This is not mere escapism; rather, Avowed evokes a sense of depth akin to a compelling fantasy novel, prompting contemplation of its themes and resonating dialogue, mirroring aspects of our own world within a magical context.
Engaging and Heroic Combat
While the game’s difficulty, even on the highest setting, might be considered somewhat lenient, the combat system proves to be thoroughly engaging. Currently utilizing a ranger build with firearm proficiency, complemented by scholar traits evoking an Indiana Jones archetype, the seamless transition into a first-person shooter-style combat approach has been surprisingly effective. Combat encounters, when appropriately challenging, deliver thrilling and heroic moments, featuring a compelling fusion of firearms, melee weaponry, and magic. The integration of guns within this fantasy setting feels distinctly appropriate and enhances the gameplay experience. — Claire Jackson
