James Van Der Beek Offers Hopeful Outlook Amid Cancer Journey

James Van Der Beek has expressed optimism regarding his ongoing battle with cancer.

In an interview with Extra, published on Thursday, March 20, Van Der Beek conveyed that he anticipates reaching the end of his treatment soon.

“Healing Phase” and Return to Work

“I feel like I can see the finish line… I’m in a healing phase, which is great,” the 48-year-old actor stated. “I’m returning to work next month. I’m using this month to truly unwind.”

The former Dawson’s Creek star was revealed as the griffin on Wednesday night’s episode of The Masked Singer, subsequently being eliminated from the show.

He shared with Extra his gratitude for the opportunity to perform incognito on The Masked Singer, especially following the public announcement of his colorectal cancer diagnosis in November 2024.

“With everything I was experiencing, and having just disclosed my health challenges, being able to wear the mask and connect with an audience without that being a factor was truly a beautiful thing,” he elaborated.

The performer added, “I valued the mask. While the costume was incredibly heavy… I truly appreciated the mask.”

“This year, I confronted my own mortality. I came face to face with death,” he shared in the Instagram video. “All the self-definitions I once held dear were stripped away. I was away for treatment, unable to be the supportive husband or the father who could tuck his children into bed and be present for them.”
