A social media influencer has revealed a clever travel tip that could allow passengers to secure an entire row of seats for themselves when flying.
Maddie Borge, a London-based content creator, recently utilized this strategy on a long overnight flight to Sydney in economy class with Etihad Airways.
The 24-year-old was embarking on a solo journey to Australia and sought to maximize her comfort during the extensive flight.
Etihad’s ‘Neighbor-Free Seat’ Option
Maddie took advantage of Etihad Airways’ “neighbor-free seat” scheme, which offers passengers the chance to bid for extra space.
This service allows travelers to bid for the opportunity to keep adjacent seats empty, providing a more private and comfortable flight experience in economy class.
How the Bidding System Works
Passengers specify the amount they are willing to pay for the extra seats. If the flight is not fully booked, Etihad may grant the bid, allowing the passenger to have the entire row.
According to Etihad, bids can be placed up to 35 hours before departure. It’s important to note that bidding is not available at the airport or once onboard the aircraft. Successful bidders are informed via email.
Maddie’s Experience and Economy ‘Upgrade’
Maddie was presented with the option to upgrade to business class for nearly £900 or purchase the entire row in economy for an additional £200.
In an Instagram video, she described the experience as “basically like business class in economy,” highlighting the ability to lie down and sleep comfortably.
Despite receiving confirmation of her successful bid, Maddie was initially confused when her boarding pass displayed only one seat.
Upon inquiry, an Etihad attendant clarified that she had indeed secured the entire row, confirming the upgrade at the check-in desk.
Enjoying the Extra Space
Maddie expressed her excitement, stating, “The best part is, because I have the whole row, I can choose different seats to sit in throughout this 13-hour flight.”
She fully exploited the luxury of space, utilizing the under-seat storage in the middle row and stretching out her legs while enjoying the window view.
