Boxing icon Frank Bruno has publicly addressed his recent hospitalization after experiencing a health emergency during a flight. The former heavyweight world champion became unwell while traveling for a speaking engagement earlier this month and was promptly taken to a medical facility after his flight landed.
Bruno Describes “Tough” Past Weeks
Bruno, aged 63, described the preceding three weeks as “challenging,” acknowledging the severity of his condition.

In a message shared on social media platform X, Bruno reassured his supporters of his improving health and expressed his gratitude for the outpouring of well wishes. “The last three weeks have been tough especially not knowing what was wrong with me and a viral infection can mean loads of things,” Bruno posted, indicating ongoing communication with his team to keep the public informed.
Viral Infection Diagnosis After Mid-Flight Illness
The incident occurred on March 3, as Bruno was on a long-haul flight from Heathrow Airport. He developed a fever mid-journey and received immediate medical attention from airport staff in Qatar before being transferred to a hospital. Following medical evaluations, he was diagnosed with a viral infection.
Speaking Engagement Plans Disrupted
The London native had been scheduled to speak at a series of events in Thailand. He was traveling on a connecting Qatar Airways flight from Heathrow to Doha, accompanied by his personal assistant, Paul Hunter, when his deteriorating health became apparent to the flight crew.

“At the moment I am told I cannot go to work so for the jobs last week and this weekend please accept my apology,” Bruno added. He also noted the understanding of event organizers, stating, “However the office is telling me most bookers want to transfer the booked dates.” Bruno further expressed his appreciation for the widespread support: “The office tells me already this morning hundreds of messages from well wishers so thank you.”
