Conor McGregor Announces Intention to Run for Irish Presidency
Conor McGregor has declared his candidacy for the upcoming Irish presidential election. The 36-year-old former MMA champion publicized his political aspirations on Instagram, accompanied by a photo of himself wearing a ‘Make Ireland Great Again’ cap. This announcement follows his recent meeting with former US President Donald Trump at the White House, where he reportedly voiced concerns about illegal immigration in Ireland, stating that “some towns have been completely overrun.”
Trump Praises McGregor Amidst Presidential Bid
Donald Trump, an avowed fan of combat sports, lauded McGregor as his “favorite Irishman” and complimented his tattoos. McGregor’s announcement post featured an image of him standing in front of a private jet, dressed casually and holding one of his children. In the social media message, McGregor urged citizens to vote for him to “have your voice heard.”
Opposition to EU Migration Pact Central to Platform
In his online statement, McGregor emphasized Ireland’s obligation to fully implement the EU Migration Pact by June 12, 2026.
He elaborated: “Between now and 12 June 2026, multiple pieces of legislation must be approved by both Houses of the Oireachtas & subsequently signed by the President. The next presidential election is mandated to occur by 11 Nov 2025. Who else will challenge the Government and oppose this legislation?
“Any other potential Presidential contender presented will offer no resistance to them. I will! Furthermore, as President, I would submit this bill to a referendum. Despite my strong opposition to this pact, the decision is not mine or the government’s to make.
“It is the prerogative of the Irish people! Unquestionably! That is genuine democracy! I am also eager to understand the rationale of our government officials for so enthusiastically endorsing this pact. I would welcome public debates! Followed by a decisive vote!”
Populist Stance and Criticism of “Establishment”
McGregor’s political ambitions are not entirely unexpected, as he has alluded to entering politics in recent years. He has adopted a populist approach, similar to figures like Trump, by publicly criticizing “the establishment” and expressing discontent with the nation’s handling of illegal immigration.
Concerns Over Government Spending and Accountability
Speaking to reporters, the former UFC star stated his White House visit was to “raise the issues the people of Ireland face.”
He further commented: “It is a deplorable situation; our government is characterized by inaction and a lack of accountability. Our national funds are being allocated to international matters that are irrelevant to the Irish populace.”
Campaign Slogan: “Vote McGregor and have your voice heard!”
Concluding his announcement, McGregor declared: “This is the future of Ireland with me as President. All Irish citizens possess a voice and a choice regarding their future! God bless our people! Vote McGregor and have your voice heard!”
