Celebrity chef reveals what US supermarkets have that other countries don’t

Curtis Stone Explains Key Difference in Global Supermarkets

Celebrated Australian chef Curtis Stone has disclosed the primary variation he observes between supermarkets globally, highlighting a surprisingly simple distinction.

Stone, a brand ambassador for Coles, currently promoting the retailer’s latest collectibles campaign in Australia, informed news.com.au that a fundamental difference exists between Australian and international grocery stores.

Stone, who shares his time between Australia and the United States with his wife, American actress Lindsay Price, stated, “The most significant difference is quite basic — it reflects the nation.”

Australian vs. Overseas Supermarket Variety

“When considering supermarket choices in Australia, while variations exist, venturing to some in England or America reveals a landscape where certain stores are highly specialized, while others cater to a broad mass market.”

The “Gap” in American Supermarket Options

He elaborated that in countries like America, you find establishments like Walmart at one end of the spectrum and specialized stores like Whole Foods, known for its focus as an “organic grocer,” at the other.

He noted a substantial “divide” between these contrasting options.

“This considerable gap is not as prevalent here, which, in my opinion, allows our supermarkets to occupy a broader market position,” he suggested.

Australian Produce Praised

Stone further emphasized Australia’s exceptional produce, particularly in seafood and meat.

“What I appreciate about collaborating with Coles is our service to everyone. We cater to the nation effectively, which involves sourcing excellent quality at great value. It’s a genuinely demanding task,” he added.

“The absence of a significant gap, I believe, allows our supermarkets to serve more areas,” Stone commented. Stefano Giovannini for N.Y.Post

The 49-year-old mentioned he was hesitant to “preach,” but recalled a conversation with a carrot supplier focused on precisely estimating upcoming demand to prevent excess, leading to waste, or shortages.

“Maintaining that equilibrium is truly challenging,” he remarked.

Coles’ New Collectibles Range Features Leakproof Glass Containers

Last week, Coles announced the launch of a new range of six leakproof glass containers for collecting, accompanied by a manual vacuum pump for sealing. Crafted from robust borosilicate glass, these containers are designed for convenient stacking in refrigerators, pantries, or freezers and are even oven-safe.

The brand partnered with the Michelin-starred chef for this collection. Customers can participate by spending $20 or more in a single transaction and scanning their Flybuys card.

After accumulating sufficient credits, shoppers can redeem them online or in-store, excluding via the app. Alternatively, customers have the option to purchase the collection at its full retail price.

The container collection became available to Australians starting March 19.
