Bella Ramsey Discloses Autism Diagnosis After “The Last of Us” Season One
Bella Ramsey, the acclaimed actor known for their role in the hit HBO drama “The Last of Us,” has publicly shared their autism diagnosis. The revelation came in a recent interview with British Vogue, following the completion of filming for the show’s first season.
Diagnosis During Filming
“I had discussed neurodivergence previously, but for some reason, I was hesitant to delve deeper,” Ramsey confessed. “I received my autism diagnosis while we were in production for season one of The Last of Us.”
According to Ramsey, the realization began while filming in Canada. A crew member, whose own daughter is autistic, noticed similarities and suggested Ramsey might also be on the spectrum. This observation prompted Ramsey to pursue a professional psychiatric evaluation, which ultimately confirmed the diagnosis.
Reflecting on Childhood and Sensory Sensitivities
Looking back on their childhood, Ramsey recalled feelings of alienation in school, often finding greater connection with adults. They also described experiencing sensory sensitivities, a common characteristic of autism. These sensitivities include a heightened awareness of subtle facial expressions and body language in others. Furthermore, Ramsey expressed discomfort with the heavy, waterproof outerwear and thermal layers needed for filming in Canada’s cold wilderness, explaining it felt like “too much” on their body.

Despite these challenges, Ramsey highlighted the positive interplay between autism and their acting career. They explained how traits associated with autism, such as keen observation and a need for routine, have become valuable assets in honing their performance skills.
