Tuchel Critiques England’s Past Performances Ahead of World Cup Qualifiers
New England manager Thomas Tuchel has offered a frank assessment of the national team’s prior deficiencies under his predecessor, Gareth Southgate. Tuchel is set to lead England for the first time in a match against Albania on Friday, followed by a home game against Latvia at Wembley three days later. These fixtures mark the commencement of their campaign to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
German Tactician Assumes England Helm
The Football Association appointed the German coach as Southgate’s successor in October, with his official tenure beginning at the start of 2025. Tuchel revealed his inaugural squad last Friday, featuring several alterations from Southgate’s Euro 2024 selection and the lineups during Lee Carsley’s interim period. He elaborated, citing a lack of: “Identity, clarity, rhythm, repetition of patterns, player freedom, player expression, and hunger. These elements were absent.”
Tuchel further asserted, “In my observation, they appeared more concerned with avoiding elimination from the tournament than driven by the excitement and determination to achieve victory.”
He emphasized, “Excitement was the missing ingredient. The sense of anticipation, the feeling among opponents that ‘this is the team to beat.’ That we arrive with a squad perceived as the team to overcome. We need to establish that reputation from the moment we qualify and arrive at the tournament, ensuring everyone acknowledges us as the team to beat.”
