Thomas Tuchel tears apart Gareth Southgate in brutal assessment of England failures

Tuchel Critiques England’s Past Performances Ahead of World Cup Qualifiers

New England manager Thomas Tuchel has offered a frank assessment of the national team’s prior deficiencies under his predecessor, Gareth Southgate. Tuchel is set to lead England for the first time in a match against Albania on Friday, followed by a home game against Latvia at Wembley three days later. These fixtures mark the commencement of their campaign to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

German Tactician Assumes England Helm

The Football Association appointed the German coach as Southgate’s successor in October, with his official tenure beginning at the start of 2025. Tuchel revealed his inaugural squad last Friday, featuring several alterations from Southgate’s Euro 2024 selection and the lineups during Lee Carsley’s interim period. Questioned about England’s shortcomings at last summer’s European Championship, where they were defeated by Spain in the Berlin final, Tuchel delivered a forthright response.

“Lack of Identity” Under Previous Management, Claims Tuchel

“[There was] no discernible playing style, not last summer,” the former Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, and Borussia Dortmund manager stated in an interview with ITV.

He elaborated, citing a lack of: “Identity, clarity, rhythm, repetition of patterns, player freedom, player expression, and hunger. These elements were absent.”

Tuchel further asserted, “In my observation, they appeared more concerned with avoiding elimination from the tournament than driven by the excitement and determination to achieve victory.”

He emphasized, “Excitement was the missing ingredient. The sense of anticipation, the feeling among opponents that ‘this is the team to beat.’ That we arrive with a squad perceived as the team to overcome. We need to establish that reputation from the moment we qualify and arrive at the tournament, ensuring everyone acknowledges us as the team to beat.”

England’s Euro 2024 Journey: A Recap

Under Southgate’s leadership, England reached their second consecutive European Championship final in Tuchel’s native Germany, following their penalty shootout loss to Italy at Wembley in 2021.

However, the Three Lions faced considerable criticism for perceived lacklustre performances throughout the competition.

Struggles in Group Stage

Despite boasting an abundance of attacking talent, England encountered difficulties in scoring goals. They secured a narrow 1-0 victory against Serbia, followed by a 1-1 draw with Denmark and a goalless stalemate against Slovenia.

Southgate’s team topped Group C with five points but required a dramatic 95th-minute bicycle kick equaliser from Jude Bellingham in their last-16 encounter against Slovakia to force extra time. Harry Kane subsequently scored the decisive goal.

Knockout Stage Drama

In the quarter-finals, England conceded first once more, with Breel Embolo giving Switzerland a late lead. Bukayo Saka equalised within five minutes, and England progressed to the semi-finals after a flawless penalty shootout.

More late drama ensued in the semi-final clash against the Netherlands in Dortmund. Xavi Simons gave the Netherlands an early advantage, but Harry Kane equalised from the penalty spot before substitute Ollie Watkins secured a 90th-minute winner.

Final Defeat to Spain

England’s fortune ultimately ran out in the final against Spain. Cole Palmer briefly ignited hopes of a comeback by cancelling out Nico Williams’ second-half opening goal, but Mikel Oyarzabal’s 86th-minute strike proved to be the decisive blow.

Tuchel’s Mission: World Cup Qualification and Instilling Confidence

Tuchel’s immediate task is to secure qualification for the World Cup. Beyond mere victories, he must foster a sense of optimism that England can adopt a proactive approach in the upcoming tournament hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, taking the initiative rather than consistently playing catch-up.
