Miami Open wildcard makes panicked swearing request of umpire: 'I'm not used to this'

Spizzirri’s Miami Open Debut Takes Unexpected Turn

American tennis player Eliot Spizzirri experienced a moment of bewilderment during his Masters 1000 debut at the Miami Open. Receiving a wildcard entry into the main draw, Spizzirri secured a victory over British qualifier Billy Harris in straight sets.

On-Court Language Query

However, the world No. 134 encountered an unexpected situation during the match. Spizzirri paused the play to inquire with the chair umpire about the permissibility of using profanity on court. The former collegiate player, relatively new to the main professional circuit, admitted to feeling unaccustomed to the heightened scrutiny.

Spizzirri’s debut at the Miami Open proved successful on Wednesday as he defeated Harris 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-2, marking only his secondmain draw win on the ATP tour.

Yet, his limited experience at this level became apparent when he approached umpire Mohamed Lahyani with a peculiar question while trailing 2-5 in the second set.

Microphone Awareness

Competing on Grandstand, the second-largest court at the Miami Open, Spizzirri was seemingly unfamiliar with the amplified environment of a major stage.

“Sir, I have a question,” Spizzirri began, “If I swear at the net – am I prohibited from swearing? Are there microphones positioned at the front?”

Umpire’s Lighthearted Response

Lahyani confirmed the presence of nearby microphones capable of capturing audible language. Spizzirri responded, “I need to relax then. I just did it and I thought, ‘oh my goodness’. I’m not used to this!”

The umpire responded in good humor, reassuring the world No. 134. “Perhaps it won’t pick it up. Sometimes they are very sensitive, no worries,” Lahyani commented.

Facing Korda in Second Round

Spizzirri will need to adapt quickly to playing on prominent stages as he is set to face 24th seed Sebastian Korda in an all-American second-round match. This contest is anticipated to be prominently featured on one of the larger courts.

College Tennis Roots

The 23-year-old has progressed significantly since his college tennis career. It was less than a year ago that Spizzirri and his University of Texas teammates narrowly lost the national championship to TCU in May.

The world No. 134 experienced disappointment after the defeat, but he learned to maintain perspective from the setback. Spizzirri recently shared with the ATP that a casual golf outing with friends helped him recognize a broader perspective beyond tennis.

“It was like, ‘Wow, I am still content.’ Yes, I didn’t win a national championship, despite wanting it intensely… My tennis results are indeed important to me, but simultaneously, they are not all-encompassing,” Spizzirri stated.

“I believe prior to encountering such a significant disappointment, perhaps a defining moment, I was overly intense and taking things too seriously. Now, I aim to appreciate the experience and ensure I don’t define my self-worth solely by tennis outcomes. I perceive myself as someone with broader dimensions beyond just being a tennis player, capable of making a greater impact in the future.”

Miami Open Success and Future Outlook

Spizzirri aims to carry this perspective into his challenging match against Korda. Regardless of the outcome, the 23-year-old has already achieved a significant milestone this week in Miami – securing his inaugural Masters 1000 victory.
